This is intended as an explanation, I guess, but I don't
understand what MUD is, how space might be represented there,
etc. etc. It might be common British slang, but I'm lost.

The acronym finder isn't much help. You don't seem to mean any
of these:

I thought it was all that dark gooey stuff that ends up caked all over
