Not having been in the market for a tent for a while I don't know what's
good or bad at the moment. What I would say is when you settle on a model,
do a Google on it and you'll get it loads cheaper on line than in the shops.
Apologies to any retailers here but cet la vie.

I bought my tent in a shop. Hilleberg Tarra, £425. It was as cheap as
I found it anywhere, vastly cheaper than most (have a Google and see if
you can do better!). /And/ because Tiso's were happy to put it up in
the shop for me I could test the headroom, check out the porch size,
standards of workmanship etc. in the flesh, including the possibility of
comparing it to their other stock. Even if it had cost a little more,
IMHO these things are a tangible benefit and thus worth paying for, but
as it was I paid less.

Remember that most shops online, at least for outdoor gear, connect to
shops that are real, physical shops.

So, in conclusion, ce n'est pas la vie.

What do you mean by "not a lot of cash"?
The Terra Nova Laser is certainly lightweight (1.2 kg), and is fine
for 3 season use, all year round unless you want to go high into the
hills in mid winter. It's about £200.

I was just mildly lusting after a Vango Spirit 200 in Blacks.

Nicely set up on the display floor.

Weighed in between 2 and 3 kilos, 2 person, with a huge porch.

Tunnel design, in fetching orange.

Around the £250 mark ISTR.

Given that I have a Vango Hydra 200 under the stairs which I haven't used
for yonks (around 2.5 kilos on the kitchen scales) there is no way I could
justify it but it did look pretty :-)

Depends on how much money, what level of quality, and what you consider
'lightweight and small pack size'.

This could be a contender - certainly worth looking in at a branch of Blacks
if there is one nearby.

fine review has me convinced. I did get a little carried away with the
auction, but never mind - I've still paid a lot less than I was looking at
paying for a tent (including postage!), so yes, I am now an owner (when it
arrives) of a Pro Action 1 man tent - can I join the club? So that now means
I am the proud owner of a rather heavy but easy to put up and (so far)
bombproof Khayam Vector and a Pro Action 1 man tent.

I'm planning a little 2 day sejourn to the Yorkshire dales towards the end
of the month to give it a try - so impressions will be given when O return.

The Pro Action 1 is a great tent. I'm 6' 4" and it's plenty long enough. The
porch is a bit small, though. It's also a tough tent - I've had mine at 4000
feet in the Cairgorms!

ellis-brigham sell the mountain hardware PCT1 for £149 squid.
this is a very sweet 1man tent, 1.5kg.

very good in the bad weather, very light.

If you search dejanews for a post by me (boo@spam_me_no_spam.net)
containing the word "laserlite" in a thread with subject "Camping Gear"
then there's a post of my initial impressions during a short trip.

Since then I've used it on one other occasion when it was extremely
windy in the Lake District. It stood up fine but the sleeve thingy that
covers the pole and has the guylines attached tore away from its ties.
The tent itself wasn't damaged but to re-attach the sleeve meant sending
it back to Terra Nova who ended up replacing the whole sleeve.

I don't really know what I think about this : on one hand the sleeve
works OK even when it's been torn from it's ties but on the other hand
it's going to be a pita if it happens regularly. It was really quite
windy though so we shall see...
