Why don't you try this free newsserver. It's in Europe but I know of people
both from U.S.A. and Australia that use it with good
    results.
    http://news.individual.net

Then it doesn't matter who your ISP is. Of course it's still nice to have
    DSL 🙂

I gave up on SPAM and redirected it to hotmail instead.

Hi, I have been using http://news.individual.net with Free Agent,
it has worked consistently, and without problems.

I would recommend it, without reservation.

There are those in the audience who will be glad to see you get it as
    well...

Just curious, is there some reason why you couldn't just ditch the AOL
reader and run FreeAgent using news.individual.net as your server?
Are you posting from something crufty like a webTV setup, or some
    such?

Don't use MSN. Use a local ISP with your DSL.

    I second that emotion.

I use MSN as my dial-up service provider ...and MSN does not provide for
any newsgroups outside of their own Microsoft-related groups. So you may
still have to use a free newsgroup server after you transition to
    DSL/MSN. (Note: I have used news.america.net and eagle.america.net for
several years and have never had any problems. Both are free and reliable.)

Shouldn't someone reply with a retro-grouch arguement on why dial-up is
better than dsl? Or that for the extra cost, dsl isn't worth it?

    Dear Kurd,

Patience--someone probably is trying, but it takes a while
with a tin can and a string.

If bandwidth needs aren't high, then there's always...

    http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2549.txt

Sadly, it's not well supported on the Windows platform.

Dial-up is better because you every time you dial in you get the
excitement of not knowing how good a connection you'll get -- sort of
like playing a slot machine. And there's that feeling of triumph when
the connect speed is higher than usual. There's no need to have those
silly-looking filter things dangling from every phone jack. You get to
feel superior to the idiotic web designers who never bothered to test
    their sites with images disabled.

If all I did were Usenet and e-mail, DSL wouldn't be worth the extra
cost. But they can have my DSL modem when they pry it from my cold
    dead fingers.

Binary? feh! You mean you had zeros AND ones?

I once had a job in a Korean airport construction site (doing systems
integration) where the program office was about a mile from the
building that had all the telco equipment in it.

So the "experts" simply ran 40 pair cable from one building to ours
(which had about 50-60 people working simultaneously at any given
    time).

Thing is, it seems the "experts" didn't understand the need to use
TWISTED PAIR cable, so basically you could hear at least some of every
phone conversation or dial-up session going on in the entire building
every time you picked up the phone.

And of course, dial-up was the only way we had of getting connection
back to the US... normally the connections were in the sub-10kbps
range. It would take an average of 3-4 attempts to actually get a
working connection, which would last an average of a few minutes at
best before the poor modem packed it in and disconnected.

And of course we had a guy on the program in the US that would change
three words in a 10 Mbyte document and send it out to us all... D'Oh!

It makes me glad every time I do anything online with my cable modem!
