I want to hang my bicycle on a hook from the ceiling. Does it make any
difference whether I place the hook in the front or rear wheel?

the bicycle by the front wheel gives a better grip to lift it on or
off the hook but the front wheel will flop to one side unless you hold
it straight. Hanging by the rear wheel will probably make your water
bottle drip and grabbing the fork or wheel to stabilize the bicycle in
the process will be cumbersome. If it's a low hook, it's a toss up.Of course, you must have noticed all this when you first tried such a
method and you'll probably discover a convenient way to do it. If you
can, place the hook just under a wheel diameter from a wall to the
bicycle will have both wheels against the wall vertically. In a
garage, I prefer to hang the bicycle from two hooks, so that it hangs
over the car. Lifting it by saddle and handle bar is clean and easy.

googles. This issue seems to get raised about 2-4 times per year. If someone
did something like a "google search", they would find the answer. Yet, its
been asked and I bet it will be asked by others several more times this
year. Its never ending.Note - there's also the Bicycle FAQ that gets republished here weekly by
some guy and also has a permanent home on Sheldon Brown's excellent site.
The answer is the same. Nevertheless, expect this question to be asked

use Google, and didn't post their question. That could range from 0 to
(some very large but less than infinite number). If only two in 1,000
people with the question ended up posting, you'd have no complaint.My poorly-founded opinion is that fewer people use Google than repeat
oft-asked questions, so the "which trailer," "how do I hang my bike," and
"what bike rack" questions will continue.Austin

It's all the same to the bike, but I've tried it both ways and
it is easier to get the bike up on the hook if you hang it by
the front wheel, at least in my experience.Compared to the rear, yes. But two hooks are easier.

Hanging from the front hook stretches the bike front to back. With the
gears/cranks/derailleurs etc located centre to rear the stretch factor is
around 1.125 as compared to hanging from the rear wheel at 1.08. This is so
because there is less weight forward of the cranks.The practical consequence of this is not too serious. If you hang front to
rear you will just need to adjust seat/handle bar positioning more often
than if you hanf back to front.Of course whatever you choose, over time the bike stretches eventually to
the stage where you will need to replace the frame or (as many do) convert
it to a tandem.Happy riding

Speaking of dripping.... If you have a suspension fork that uses and
oil bath for damping, hanging the bike upside down or by the front
wheel will reveal when the top seals have finally worn out. Be sure to
hang it over a spot where a little oil can drip without harm. I learned
this one the hard way....-Buck

So, if I hang it from both wheels. will my frame get taller over time? Is
it important to rotate the wheels, so they don't become teardrop in shape?
Is this possibly why Gregory Peccary (see earlier post) is having trouble? -
Not exactly Leo. Hanging from both wheels (with the frame unsupported)
causes the frame to pull down slightly from the cranks in the middle thus
developing a distinct sag (to the trained eye). This is useful though for
short riders who want to ride on big rims.Similarly, and this is little known fact, Olympic track racers always rest
their bikes flat on the ground, left side down. This results in a slight
left curve of the rims from the heavy but supported cranks/derailleurs. The
benefits then when riding counter clockwise around a heavily cambered track
are obvious.Wheel rotation is indeed required. Very perceptive Leo. Alternatively one
can simply hang the bike upside down every other day to correct the previous
day's gravtiation damage.I hope these seasoned words help even more new cyclists on the effects of

Hanging a bike by its wheels is a really bad move, all of the free
ions in the rim sink to the bottom of the wheel, stretching the top
spokes, compressing the bottom spokes, and leaving a definite bulge
where the hanger was.In addition, the butyl of the inner tube gradually deteriorates at the
top as the nitrogen sinks to the bottom, allowing the pure oxygen to
attack the black colouring of the butyl. Apparently only black inner
tubes are affected, so clear ones will be fine. The front forks are
also affected, as the are made to be in compression, and once the
compression is released, the kinetic tension is released, so
lengthening the forks.The only way to keep the bike in good condition is to use it everyday!

In some other discussions, it has been established that oxygen passes
through the tube walls faster than nitrogen. Therefore, you would expect
the top of the tire to go flat first. Of course, you wouldn't know it until
you took the bike down to ride it. If the bike was hanging upside-down,
when you turned it over, the flat part would be on the bottom, WHICH IS
ACTUALLY WHAT HAPPENS. -
This is my point exactly Leo in my previous post. Every other day hang the
bike upside down. This reverses the gravitational damage I have highlighted.
It would also correct your oxygen vs nitrogen transfer difference as oxygen
loss on every other day would even up the previous day's oxygen loss on the
exact opposite side of the tire. One would have to take great care though
not to rotate the tire at all otherwise oxygen loss could occur in the same
spot. This actually explains a lot of previously unexplained explosive
punctures.richie
