I use cyclistats from http://www.shastasoftware.com/.
Very good software with may features. Has frequent updates with auto update. -
If your into the pda-scene, you can get quite comprehensive piece of software at:
http://www.mysporttraining.com/
(Will even read data from your Polar HR-monitor)Speaking of Polar, you can come a long way by using Polars "Precision Performance" program included with purchase of most medium to highend Polar HR-monitors, it has practically all the features your going to need for the first 3-4 years IMO.

I created my own in an Excel spreadsheet format.

DITTO. Simple excel spreadsheet captures milage, time, avg speed, avg HR, and notes on how I was feeling during the ride. -
A second vote for cyclistats, the program is awesome and very motivating in itself. The creator updates that program very often will tons of cool features. It is by far and away the best! 🙂
-
A third vote for CycliStats. I was using an Excel spead sheet as well, I found CycliStats. I transfer my past info over to it using the trial version, I love the amount of info you can pack into it. I also got a new bike. And it allows multiple bikes and multiple users. You can download a 1 month trial version at"
And NO freeware or any other [censored]. ( not even an AOL subscription) 🙂
