    Today was the first major trail maintenance event for the year in our
    local mountains and we had very successful results. Everyone met up
    at 7:30AM and worked till around 2PM to repair damage from recent
    heavy rain storms. We repaired ruts, installed waterbars, cut fallen
    trees, and brushed back the blooming poison oak. The group I was in
    ended up hiking a total of 12 miles, and here are some photos from
    throughout the day.

    The road into the trailhead was somewhat treacherous if your vehicle
    didn't have clearance.

    After signing in for the Forest Service, we started immediately on a
    section where the trail was no longer obvious.

    Nice work! Seems like you had a pretty good turnout. Sometimes it
    feels just as good to give back to the trails as it is to ride them.
    You are lucky to have such a great area so close to you. Keep up the

    Sure you can! BTW, we are actually adding drops and jumps in our trail
    maintenance. In areas of heavy boulders, we reroute eroded trails over
    the rocks to add fun!.

    Actually, we did create some dips on wider trail sections. The wooden
    waterbars (which were always reinforced on both sides with rocks) were
    typically installed on narrow cliff-side sections where a big dip might
    encourage a washout. I'd venture to say that it's not always exact science,
    and there are likely improvements we could make given adequate resources.

    Yup. I was in a group that headed up Trabuco and a second group went up West
    Horsethief. For non-locals, this is in Southern California.

    I know what you mean. Sometimes there's little alternative; you do your
    best given the conditions. However, I've yet to see a waterbar improve a
    trail in the long term- and quite often they cause much worse erosion than
    if nothing had been done at all. YMMV of course; good luck.
