  1. So I biked to work in six degree weather. I overdressed a bit.

    Lesson #1) Googles fog up
    Lesson#2) Googles aren't necessary

My toes got cold towards the end.

I missed the first four days this week because I'm willing to try cold
but not ice. It was just too slippery to do it before today.

  2. A related question - Does breathing thru the mouth makes you loose more
body heat - when compared to breathing thru the nose only ?

    thanks,
    ravi

I don't know but I can take an educated guess. I'm pretty sure that
breathing in through the nose heats up the air more than breathing in
by mouth because of all the capillaries and such. I've heard that and
    it seems logical.

At best the air in the lungs can only rise to body temperature. So air
leaving by the nose, if at body temperature, is no gain. However if
the air is still lower than body temperature (likely) then the nasal
passage would likely heat it a bit more unless we have very smart
    capillaries with one way heating.

Exhaling by mouth would not heat it again.

So, I would guess that breathing through the nose does cost more heat.
On the other hand, breathing by mouth brings cold air directly into
the lungs. I would think that we're supposed to heat the air before
    passing it into the lungs.

Of course, if we were really Intelligently Designed, I wouldn't have
all this mucus and other snot rockets clogging my bacalava.

In somewhat less cold conditions I've tried clear lens'd
cycling glasses and 'shop' safety glasses (mostly to
keep rain out of my eyes,) and those fog up enough to
be a PITA. The trick to keeping them from misting up
is to not stop moving :-) Now I'm doing quite well
without, as my helmet cover stretches over the visor
on my helmet; the visor works well in that respect.
I've heard baseball caps are good for that, too. Maybe
better, as the bill of a ball cap is so much longer
than a helmet visor. I've had eyewear actually guide
raindrops right into my eye, which kind of defeats
    the intended purpose.

Some folks experience runny, teary eyes more than
others in a cold breeze. At temps like 6F I think
I'd give ventilated ski goggles a try. Or blink
a lot so my eyelids don't freeze stuck (I dunno if
that happens, but just in case ...)

I hear ya. I know riding on ice is possible and do-able,
but I just feel too shakey riding on surfaces I'd prefer
    not even to walk on.

    cheers,
    Tom
