  1. do you use, especially if you have been a long time reader of this newsgroup,
please. AOL is planning to discontinue access and earthlink does not seem to
    grant it either.

  3. My son accesses newsgroups via Earthlink, and has been for years. Are they
    planning on discontinuing this service?

Doubt that Earthlink would drop it. My guess that AOL is
dropping it to conserve money due to their dwindling
customer base and also due to their recent legal troubles
IIRC. I know Time Warner regrets getting AOL.

    Last I recall:

    news.west.earthlink.net (West of the Mississippi?)
    news.east.earthlink.net (East of the Mississippi?)

    Yep. http://news.earthlink.net/

Two servers are available for Newsgroups usage:
    news.west.earthlink.net and news.east.earthlink.net. For
best performance, if you live west of the Mississippi River,
you should use news.west.earthlink.net. If you live east of
the Misissippi River, you should use
news.east.earthlink.net. If you are unsure, you should use
news.east.earthlink.net. Both servers will have the same
functionality, capability, list of newsgroups, and articles.

I used to have an account with them. It may be that they
are upgrading their servers. Then again the page above was
    updated a couple years ago.

I used ATT Worldnet for several years, and would still be using it if they
offered their service out here in the boonies.

Also (IIRC) they don't access binary ng's so if that is your thing, look
elsewhere. No other suggestions from me; I use my local phone company to
connect using DSL and am perfectly happy with it.

    TIA,

Earthlink doesn't have usenet servers anymore? Since when?
The last time I checked, EL had 2 usenet servers with a 5GB
limit per 30 days. Google: EarthLink Newsgroups FAQ

Comcast has ditched their in house usenet server in favor of
Giganews... but it's still free, if you aren't a "big" user
and stay within whatever their 30 day limit is - which is
    probably 5GB.
