new Look cleats

The new ones have a different material, some sort of teflon-like
plastic, on the pedal contact points at the tip and rear groove,
supposedly to reduce their tendency to squeak. The old ones are
discontinued.

I think the Keo cleats are phyisically smaller than the older cleats.

Besides the new (smaller) Keo cleats the normal Look Delta are also updated
with the same bi-material stuff. It should solve the sqeaking problem.

I have nearly 2000 miles on my Look Keos and they have never squeaked. They
do, however, wear out quickly from walking on them. I'll replace the cleats
by March for race season. I just wish they had a cheaper pedal with the same
small cleat that I could use for my spare bike.

The teflon bits on the non-KEO cleats do seem to control the squeaking,
but for some reason my Kool Kovers don't fit on the new cleats... too thick?

existing pedals.

Is this new material just a coating that will eventually wear off?

I'm currently in the process of switching over to SPD after 13+ years
on Looks. I don't think a more expensive cleat (that wears faster) is
going to change my mind.

They don't. They make two sizes now. The smaller ones are only for the new
Keo pedals.

No. It's a thick slicker feeling plastic-like material. If the wear I'm
experiencing is typical you'll wear out the standard plastic from even
minimal walking before any noticeable wear in the other material from cleat
engagement. Mine feel as secure as the day I bought them, but at some point
as the cleat becomes thinner from wear on the bottom (there is a wear
indicator ) they will become structurally unsound. I never owned the old
style, but I assume the bottom of the cleat doesn't wear out sooner than the
old style cleats (though perhaps the smaller size wears a bit faster the
larger). I guess I should find out if covers for walking in these are
available.

The white stuff is Teflon (claimed quieter running) tinted
and set so as to be a wear indicator.
