PHOENIX (Ticker) - The Arizona Diamondbacks added depth at first base
Monday, signing free agent Tony Clark to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the 32-year-old Clark made
$750,000 last year.

In 106 games with the New York Yankees last year, Clark batted .221
with 16 homers, including three in one game, and 49 RBI. He received
more playing time than expected due to the extended absence of former
All-Star first baseman Jason Giambi, who battled parasites and a benign
tumor. The addition of Clark will help take the pressure off second-
year player Chad Tracy, who is projected to move across the diamond
from third base following the Diamondbacks' flurry of moves this
offseason.

Richie Sexson, Arizona's Opening Day first baseman last year, signed
with the Seattle Mariners as a free agent in December and Shea
Hillenbrand, who played the position when Sexson was lost for the
season with a shoulder injury, was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays two
weeks ago.

The Diamondbacks also signed free agent third baseman Troy Glaus to a
four-year deal in December and traded for outfielder Shawn Green, who
has played some first base, earlier this month.

Clark, who played collegiately at Arizona, is a career .264 hitter with
191 homers and 635 RBI with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, New
York Mets and New York Yankees.
