I cycled to and from the Australia Day fireworks display in Perth last night. On the way in I noticed quite a few more bikes than normal and was cheered by the fact that maybe this will help people realise that they don't need to rely on their cars quite so much (although this was forced by the road closures and parking restrictions).
However, on the way back I was totally stunned by the number of bikes heading back along the path next to the Kwinana freeway. There was an almost endless stream of hundreds of bikes taking up most of the path. I didn't see any other skinny wheeled bikes, almost all were mountain bikes (or being WA, that should be "small hill" bikes). There were a whole load which sounded like they'd just been dug out from the bottom of the pile in the shed and some very dubious riding styles (loads of "knees pointing way out to the sides" low saddle types). It looked like those shots you see of rush hour in Beijing.
I just loved seeing all those bikes actually being *used*!

Not that I noticed, but there were enough kids wandering around that maybe this kid's parents took the wrong one home by mistake 🙂 There were plenty of occupied child seats on bikes, many of which reminded me of one reason why my son will sit in a trailer rather than a seat. There is no way I'm so cruel as to make him sit with his nose 6 inches from my [censored]!
