If you are doing the C2C on commuter type tyres I would not advise using
the 'Old Coach Road' section at Keswick. Which would then mean using the
path by the side of the A66 which IMO is a bit grim. I did the C2C on
2.1" knobblies no problem, except I walked most the 'Old Coach Road' see
this link. The view is worth the walk by the way.

Thanks for that. We intend to do Whitehaven to Penrith on day 1 so would
probably be pushed to do the coach road "detour".
I'm a tad confused re your a66 comment the sustrans map seem to show the
route not as a 'path by the side of the A66' but as along a minor road
most of the way?
BTW any other advice re the c2c?
We are doing it over the first May bank holiday. Car to Whitehaven, 3 days
to Sunderland. With one of the bag carrying firms taking luggage between
b&b's and taking us back to Whitehaven.
Any suggestions as to the best places to stay on route?

We rode Whitehaven to Greystoke via the old coach road easily on the first
day. The main C2C route from Kewick follows the A66, sometimes right at the
side of it and sometimes just parallel to it. I have never riden it but have
driven past a number of cyclist and would not fancy it, particularly on a
bank holiday weekend. Maybe someone who has done it could comment with more
authority.
We stopped O/Night at Glenlea house, Lowca, just outside Whitehaven it was
OK, bikes stored in the dining room, safe but a little strange. Good food
and nice view. The rugby club in the village made us very welcome for
pre-start refreshments. I would not recommend staying in Whitehaven town
centre. The hotels are mainly contractor guest houses from what I saw and
not that cheap
First night we pre-booked at Brathen in Greystoke, which was excellent. The
village pub is within staggering distance and serves good grub. There are a
number of B&Bs in Greystoke and all are apparently good value.
We didn't book the next nights stop intending to find somewhere in Consett.
We didn't fancy it when we got there and carried on to Stanley and after
asking at a garage were lucky to get a house to ourselves from a lady who
owned a florist and rented out property. She came in on the morning and did
us breakfast. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the business.
Greystoke to Consett was too far in one day let alone carrying on to
Stanley.
I have the B&B Guide and C2C map, you are welcome to borrow them if you
promise to send them back after your ride. 'Remove my bra' and e-mail me
your address and I'll drop them in the post.
