I saw an ad when I was googling once.

As opposed to Chained shaft drive? I'd guess that if you're going to go shaft drive then you're better off without a chain.

for $575.

they have become more (more meaning a higher number than near non-existence a few years back) common in Europe. There was a review of a townbike with it in C+ mag that said the chain-free mech was (on that model) OK but would wear and has since been discounted (by other manufacturers, mind you...) as less efficient than the higher (1st derailleur setup, 2nd hub gear setup) efficiency setups. Altho their main grief was the weight of thebike they did seem to hope that others would refine and sort it out.

They appear on eBay.com.au every now and again. I think I saw one listed
there a few days ago.
The weight of these things is in the way to heavy range for my liking.

yeah, but the weight aint so much the drive, its just cos their doing the frame, etc with straight guage wrought iron

I saw one in (...insert shop name...) North Sydney the other day (Where they were rude and overcharged me for a BB, after wanting $20 for an old [censored] quill stem from the rubbish bin..)

It was quite a nice bike - in for a repair I think.. Nice alloy shaft drive, on a pale blue nameless and brandless fast hybrid style bike with nice machined alloy stem and flat bars. Looked pretty nice. Not a mooring block - more of a general hybrid weight.

I was tempted to ask more about it, but the [censored] attitude of the dudes made me want to leave.

The UK magazine 'Velovision' reviewed one a couple of
issues ago. Issue 10 in fact, I just checked:

I've never ridden one, but would like to try one.
I think it would make a great commuter. And then
there was this time on Castlereagh St (Sydney CBD) - my
chain came off an I was in the middle lane surrounded by
fast moving busses and taxis. <lie>They were all
really nice and didn't yell or blow their horns</lie>.

The chain drive seems to add 1kg to the bike.
Maintenance is grease at 500km & every 6 months.

I don't know if it's been done, but it might offer a nice alternative to the long convoluted chainlines on SWB bents. Note that this thought is straight off the top of my head and I haven't thought about it much.
