Good afternoon! I have just started a new job and started sneaking in rides during my lunch hour. I was wondering how many people ride during their lunch hour and what distances? I am limited to about an hour and fifteen minutes on ride time. I average about 12 miles and was wondering if this is o.k for a one hour ride? Any response would be great in helping me better my lunch time ride.

A lunch time ride...imagine that! I too have just been presented (or rather I just of) a chance to ride during lunch. Hopefully my ride will at least be 10 miles. It's a rather hilly route around here and I'm not a big fan of hills. It's the old grind it out routine.
Anyway I plan on riding whichever route 30 minutes out turn around and 30 minutes back. So I'll get the hills twice. Maybe I'll get better.
But will I like the hills better?

Yes you will. If you ride them regularly, you will get better. Then, when you begin to drop people, you will begin to LOVE them.

Thanks Pete...I trust you will be right!

I try to do a lunch ride as often as possible. I work two jobs (average about 60 hours/week), so commuting and lunch rides make up the vast majority of my time in the saddle. I also cover about 12 miles or so on these rides (that's on my 39 pound mtb). I could squeak in a couple more on my road bike, but I don't usually use that for commuting.

Hey there "Homie!" I'm origionally from the Taos area. I moved to Denver about seven years ago, after college, and love it here. Like the others, my ride consists of rolling hills and my twelve miles are on my road bike. I am kind of bummed because I'm used to longer rides and was wondering if I'm just not riding as hard as I should because I'm worried about getting back to work. Anyway, if you can, eat some Hatch Chili for me!

Howdy amigo, since my second job is working as a server at Martin's Capitol Cafe -- Roswell's best Mexican food restaurant, I'll be more than happy to eat some good chili for ya. 😉
My lunch loop is mostly flat, if yours is hilly and you're cutting short b/c you're worried about getting back on time then 12 miles is probably fine.

A bunch of us go out for a lunchtime ride most days. Some days we just treat them like recovery rides. Other days we treat them like a race. It's all good! 😎

One other thing that I should have mentioned is that I ride for two hours before or after work. Durring the winter, I use my rollers unless the weather is good enough to get out. I guess it's is more of a spinning/frustration release ride for me. I just wanted to know how others might approach this.

JerryWell. I did it. And what a gorgeous day here in B'ham, Alabama. 50's, sunny, light wind.
The hill? Guess what it's name is, yup, "Big Mountain Road". And it was- big.
But once up a nice nice downhill.I think I willl do that again.
Tonight it's the weekly night ride with the gang. Yippee!
