  1. Ok, so last night I was out on the lash (I don't do it often at all), and a
colleague offered me a cigarette. So after lighting up the penny dropped.
I slurred "Gosh I forgot, I don't smoke" and handed the cigarette to someone
    who still does.

Thats a corner stone. Before I've fallen down on smoking after I've had a
few too many. Does this mean that I am officially a non-smoker? I think
    so.

Now thats official, I can get on with losing my quitting smoking weight.
    Huzzah.

  2. Congratulations. Yes, I believe that does mean you are an official
non-smoker. But, take it from a 2 and a half year official non-smoker,
there are still times when I think I could have one. I've never done
it, but it has crossed my mind.

You must always be on your guard.

I keep waiting for the time when cigarette smoke will disgust me, but
it hasn't yet happened. I still like the way it smells and I sometimes
go out of my way (walk near the smoking section in a restaurant) to get
    a whiff.

I know some social smokers who have one or two when they're out with their

ignorant or stupid, because it's still terribly bad for you just to have a
    few occasionally.

Out on the lash, it means that I was out drinking. There is this vodka bar
in Winchester, where they do about 30+ different flavours. I got stuck on
    blackjack flavour. Yum.

My good boss left the company that I work for. I don't normally go out
drinking, but seeing as I really liked my boss, I did. So now I have sore
feet, and I am left with the not so good boss.

  8. I used to smoke if I was out with a group a friends and had one too
many Margaritas LOL I have never smoked any other time. I think the
shock value is what was fun. People look at you and go "Laureen WTF are
you doing????" Of course there was also the night I got up and sang
Blue Bayou by Linda Rondstadt when the kareoke sp? mike opened. OMG!
Those were the days LOL!!!!! One night I sang Black Dog and people
threw dollar bills at you if they liked you. Hell, made a few bucks!
LOL. I would no more go up and sing than the I would fart in public but
in a few months now hhmmmmmm I just might LOL!!!!

    Good going.

I'm now almost a 20 year non-smoker (sometime this year is the
    anniversary).

Eventually, you automatically don't smoke, and no longer need deliberate
    will power.

Glad you had the will power and used it.

I quit nearly 25 years ago. There are still times - once or twice a year -
when I dream I'm smoking the most wonderful tasting cigarette ever made. I
have to get up and check around the bed to make sure I don't find ashes or
    matches...just to be sure....

Only the religious right does that. Others, like me, are trying to point out

Oh, yeah they did--but it wasn't recognized as being from that. Take
emphysema for example. It kills non-smokers but they get it from someone in
their household smoking. And, not only that; it has been proven that kids
are more likely to get asthma from being around parents that smoke. But,
you are wrong when you say, "It is up to the person smoking" if they like

I don't believe "pot" will lead to heroin use. You are projecting your fears
on other people. "The right to put someone else down for smoking" is from
experience of the dangers of smoking. The "worse thing in the world" is not
a reformed smoker---it's people like you who try to deny deny deny there is

"The association in part is explained by genetic influences," Dr. Nancy L.
Pedersen from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, told Reuters Health.
"Hence, further attempts to study risk factors in general for Parkinson's
disease should entertain the possibility that there are complex interactions
between genetic mechanisms and putative risk factors."

"We have not planned any further studies directly, although we may be
exploring whether there is a genetic interaction between smoking and certain
    genes," Pedersen said.

  17. G.Q.-Good for you on quiting, I wish you luck. As to "the government"
trying to scare people about smoking, I'm not sure I know what you mean,
I personally have not seen any sinister black helicopters hovering about
pulling banners depicting Joe Camel being burned in effigy, but given
the billions in tax dollars spent on tobacco subsidies, any anti-smoking
agenda is certainly a mixed message at best. In any case, the American
Lung Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society
and similar groups have a LOT to say about smoking, and none of it is
good. As Pat has mentioned, second hand smoke does indeed harm children
in a house with smoking parents. It's the nature of scientific
knowledge to increase over time; simply because something was not
recognized as a problem years ago does not mean the threat didn't exist.
Even if 2nd hand smoke were not an issue, the diseases caused by
smoking are born by all members of the society in a myriad of ways, not
simply by those puffing away. And come on, the red herring about
marijuana leading to heroin? No one has seriously attempted to make
that connection since the "Reefer Madness" days. Hate to sound like one
of those rabid reformed smokers you refer to, but I smoked back when I
was a dumb teenager about 25 years ago. It has to be just about the
stupidest behavior anyone can engage in. Good for you on quiting, KEEP
    IT UP!

    Dan

BTW I'll say this about the government & smoking, I WHOLE HEARTEDLY
APPLAUD initiatives to ban smoking in public places such as bars &
restaurants, like the one recently passed in my home town of Columbus,
Ohio. Used to be my wife and I had to wait for our visits to places
like NYC & LA before we could have the freedom to simply walk into any
such establishment, sit down at the bar or a table & enjoy ourselves
without having the experience degraded by the byproducts of someone
else's bad habit. Even if such exposure DOESN'T inflict any lasting
harm, it's damned annoying and makes it impossible to savor a good food
    & drink.
