amphetamines.

competition was scant compared to today's pros where there are hundreds
of super fit atheletes with better salaries and sponsors willing to pay
them. Lafferty want to ruin that and return to the day of much lower
overall competition and 5 speed bikes and no Americans in the peloton.

Pappy, you are of course aware that prior to the 1960s, drugs were not
banned in cycling. There have been many discussions here and articles (good
ones by Les Woodland in ProCycling) about all the concoctions used by the
pros from the beginning of the sport. Most of those preparations were
designed to allow riders to somply finish grueling events--like true 6 Day
races. What changed in the 1990s was the introduction of much more
sophiticated performance enhancers like EPO, HgH, Insulin for glycogen
packing and now blood doping (the one, true pre-1960s performance enhancer).
Les Woodland has a very good article on that in the current ProCycling.

So, in a way it would be nice to go back to the status of the sport in the
1940s and early to mid-1950s from a drug sense and see what the real effect
of better training ethods (HR and Wattage training) would be. But the clock
can't be turned back.

Back in the '40s or 50's, $20K went a long way. My parents house cost $20K
in 1953. Recall also that in the '20s and '30s, cyclists in the US made as
much or more money than baseball players. They were among the highest paid
athletes in professional sport.

Not at all. If the present peloton were completely clean and riding with
the current technology and modern training methods, I think you would see

Maybe you think me a fool, but I imagine that Brian Lafferty is not only the
bringer of the sad stories - I imagine that he is also troubled that they
take up so much space. And they do, as he does no more than transmit his
selection of original materials.

Perhaps your double-termed president will give up the war on drugs overall ?
Or is the answer in Brian's other line of thinking - let them go all drugged
up and we'll learn about the efficacy of the pharmaceutical companies.

Or the other approach, and get the hot-air blowers of UCI out of the
testing, and let the police deal with illegal drug distribution, whether
it's in athletics or just on the street.

The drug issue is really a very small issue. The bigger one is whether
bicycle racing remains something other than an advanced gladiator
playground, like other spectator sports. I think that when athletes cease
to serve as role models of achievment through personal efforts, you don't
really have much left to look at, other than the battles - you can forget
about the people.

Please don't reply with an accusation that being french, I don't care about
your six-time winner. I don't care much about most professional riders.
But I do spend time (a little) in the cycling school, hoping that I am not
too serious a threat to the moral norms we used to find in this sport.
