None at all. Tread is, for road use, entirely superfluous on bicycle tyres.

Slick tyres are the best. I like Michelin Carbons but I dont think they
do 27 inch versions.

*Any* bike tyre will be relatively slippy at this time of the year when the
roads are damp and perhaps oily and greasy. I would rather rely on taking
care on bends and roundabouts by not over cooking the turns and looking
forward to the warmer weather when more risks can be taken.

On my road bike I use Continental Ultra Gator Skins which have lost traction
in the wet accelerating from stopped. The hybrid I am using at the moment
has a Continental Contact on the front wheel, the tread of which is
supposedly modelled on animals paws!

This tyre disappeared from beneath me on a slippery roundabout and I
crashed. This was not the fault of the tyre which is still on my bike a year
later, but simply there being a patch of oil on which no tyre will grip.

Shouldn't make any difference: cycle tyres have too little surface area
in contact to aquaplane, so tread should only make much difference if
there's a load of cack beyond water.

Though some tyres with different rubber compounds will beahve better
than others. I've never found my Schwalbe Marathons to be a problem in
this regard.

Otherwise, to stop sliding out on bends, slow down.

The best tyres for slippery tarmac are, surprisingly enough, slicks or
near slicks - but made of soft rubber (the downside is that they
puncture more easily and wear more quickly). If your wheels really are
27" and not 700C, the smallest you can get now are about 28mm (1.25"😉.

You're lucky the front didn't go as well. It only takes one small slip to
cause serious injury. Slow down!

The lower the pressure and the wider the tyre, the more grip you'll have.
(Of course the tyre still needs to be hard enough to prevent pinch-flats).
Tread and compound are very much secondary factors, but in theory at
least, slicker tyres are better for tarmac as more rubber contacts the
road in both dry and wet conditions.

Bead diameter must be 630mm. Width range depends on rim model and frame &
mudgaurd clearance. You might still find 1" or even narrower tyres for
27" but you'd be wise to use wider than that if concerned about grip.

AIUI tread on road tyres is there for marketing reasons and no other.
The animal paws and bionic aspects do nothing to contradict that idea.

Indeed. I bought it for its anti-puncture properties, rather than the tread.
Together with the Schwalbe Marathon Plus on the rear wheel, I've had only
one puncture in nearly two years.

The last puncture I had was when I posted this on 6 NOV 03, over 6000 miles
ago!

"The Continental Contact on my front wheel suffered its first puncture this
morning after 9 months.

It was pierced by a 5mm shard of glass, but unlike on previous occasions
when I've got rid of any tyre that has punctured and fitted a different make
to get to the "perfect" tyre, I'm keeping this one - I've been impressed
with it otherwise"

My winter commute includes loads of broken glass, so I'm well chuffed with
both tyres.

You need a soft compound tyre. Tread is irrelevant for bikes on tarmac.
If your rims really are 27" and not 700c, look for some Specialized
Turbo 7/8" tyres. They sometimes pop up on eBay.
