Out of curiosity, I checked out that site you mentioned and, out of
further curiosity, had a squiz at the link to Frybread ("Symbol of
Intertribal Indian Unity" -- how could I go past that! :-).

Anyway, the second frybread recipe at

concludes with the following advice for saving the oil:

Now that's essentially what I used to do back in the days when I used
enough oil to be worth saving, but the sliced apple has me puzzled.
Any idea what the intended purpose of the apple is? Anyone?

Well, it's certainly Australian, but I can't speak for the others.
However, I suspect it's also now rather archaic, even here.
(I still listen to the "wireless", for example. ;-)
[Hmm... Note added in proof: My Australian COD says "squiz" is
Australian slang meaning to look or glance. So it could be more than
just a peek, and that's my understanding too.]
