Preferred method?

And never pin them on your jersey yourself, always put your jersey on and get someone to pin
them while your in the riding position, that way they will be very tight and won't flap around
in the wind.

If you can't find anyone to pin them on then do it yourself with the jersey off, but make sure you
pin them all facing the wrong way, that way when you're at the start line doing the role call and
an official sees that the numbers are upside-down or whatever you can get the rider beside you to
repin them.

You always see amateurs racing with the numbers flopping around catching air.
