  1. Which brand make the better disc brakes?

If you guys think that some other brand is better than these two, please tell me what they are.

  2. I like my Shimano 525 hydros. Cheap and good🙂

A more sensible question would be to ask between specific models of disc brakes. Obviously, both these manufacturers make different types of brakes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. As far as mechanical brakes go, the Avids are hard to beat; while Hayes are regarded as some of the most reliable hydraulics, albeit a little heavy.

Some advice - if you have a specific question, ask it! I don't think you're going to get much out of a poll like this except for inciting people into a slanging match between their favourite brands - with little meaningful output.

So what do you want to know? Best disc brakes for your use and conditions? Lightest discs? Most powerful discs? Most reliable discs? Ask a direct question and you're more likely to get a helpful answer.

  4. I use Magura Julie hydros, while nothing to write home about (I train mostly on the road and the occasional trail so it's plenty enough for my uses), I like the fact that it's a mineral oil system which in theory doesn't need to be bleeded ever again once installed, mine is 3 yrs old and no need for bleeding still. I think Shimano hydros also use mineral oil. Hayes on the other hand uses DOT brake fluid which would break down over time and needs bleeding every season or two.

Hydro systems are also easier on the hands when modulating the braking, at least that's what I find them to be.

   My Question

Thanks for correcting me sssamcz. What I wanted to know is that which of these two brands' 6" mechanical disc brakes has better power, modulation, and levers. I'm an urban freerider, now working on some trials basics. So if anyone who can help answer my question and able to give me some suggestions, that would be very helpful.

Thanks again sssamcz, and to everyone else.

  6. Avids mech brakes are prettymuch the best out there i think

    OK, that's better 🙂

While I don't have much experience of your type of riding, the Avid mechanicals are widely regarded as being some of the best functioning disc units out there, and very easy to set up and maintain - which can be an issue with discs in general for those used to dealing with rim brakes.

I do know a lot of trials guys use hydraulic rim brakes (such as the Magura HS-33), I think because it gives a more direct feel and precise control than discs. If you're just starting out though this may not be that big an issue. I'm not sure whether there are many trials guys on these boards, but a quick google turned this trial forum up and I'm sure you'll find guys there who are able to offer a bit more specific advice.

    Good luck,

    Sam
