  1. We all crack.
    We all have limits.
When it comes down to the line & you need that extra 1% to bring it home, what do you use upstairs when the tank is empty, the legs are giving out & the lungs are heaving ?

What’s you mantra, your carrot, your final card?

I think to myself that if I get dropped on this hill, I won't get back and won't be able to contest the sprint. Even if I'm no chance in the sprint, at least I'd be able to say I contested it!

I don't have one for cycling but I use a kind of vision for long runs.
I imagine I'm running into a long dark tunnel, I run down through the tunnel
and enter the Olympic stadium. Forty thousand spectators leap to their feet.
I run down to the inside lane and start running around the track. The crowd
is chanting my name, MARTY ,MARTY. I've nearly completed the lap of the
stadium and the Ethiopian guys still haven't arrived. I raise my arms and
the crowd lets out a thunderous roar as I cross the line. I've won the
    marathon!

Ok it sounds corny but it works for me.

That's so much better than mine.
When I'm running, e.g. racing my half marathon and I know I've gone out
too hard and can't possibly maintain the pace but am determined to do
so: "the faster I run, the sooner it's over, the faster I run, the
sooner it's over, and I might just get a PB!"

When I'm racing triathlon: "oh my god, if i don't get out of the water
soon, i'll throw up, gotta get out of the water, then people will stop
kicking me in the head... the faster i cycle, the sooner i get off this
instrument of torture and start running, yeah, head down, i'll be
running soon... la la la i'm a runner, i love running, ha ha look at all
the people i'm running past ha! and you thought triathlon was just about
    cycling mwahahahaha..."

That one road race I did: "keep my speed up, then when they lap me i can
tag back on, oh [censored] they just overtook me on the hill and they won't
lap me for another 5 laps, [censored] [censored], the faster i ride the sooner it's
over and i can concentrate on this afternoon's crit...and more
importantly tomorrow's 10km run... oh i'm dying this was not meant to be
    a TT"

That one crit: well, I didn't have time for a mantra. They put the girls
in with the boys and they lapped us pretty quickly (I had no idea how to
corner with so many people, and didn't want to bring everyone down...) I
was just keeping with the girls but I didn't realise they'd throw us all
out when the boys lapped us, it hardly seemed fair seeing as normally
girls aren't expected to race boys...

Maybe I should get a real mantra.

Yes.. you would be much quicker if you didn't
have to repeat all of that over and over during
    a race!

I don't think I have any mantra. I just want to
get to the line before anyone else.

Mine is: I am a machine: I am strong I am fit I am prepared I am a machine

If the finish is uphill then it's : I am a hillclimbing mountain eating machine

😄 Now you know my secret weapon hahhahaahhahahahaha

If im on a longer ride one of those gels does wonders (sometimes. plus all the fiddling with the f%$ker takes your mind off your legs lungs 🙄 )

Sometimes 'listening' to the fastest speedmetal-style song does it for me (as does Vivaldi on a descent. then again flip over to that speed-metal track again, will ya?)

The mantra that has pushed me lately is to do better than last time, so I guess that's a PB-thing.
And you JUST KNOW its gonna be easier once you bridge that gap and get back on...

  9. Tri cycle leg has me saying "for god's sake ride faster, you're complete
    [censored] at the run".

DaveB "slightly [censored] swimmer, fairly [censored] cyclist"
