came up last week.

Buy secondhand. £100 buys you a pretty awful new bike.

If you know what you're looking for (or can get somebody who does to check
it before you buy) I would brave eBay. I picked up a fairly decent
secondhand Claud Butler MTB on eBay with hydraulic disc brakes & deore LX
kit for £180 and it'll still going fine after a lot of uncaring treatment
for 18 months in the Scottish mud (altho the poor RST front fork has about
had it).

Why a mountain bike?
Avoid any form of suspension at that price, it'll be totally useless at the
expense of downgrading other aspects of the bike and adding masses (no pun
intended) of weight.
Double (or better yet triple) your budget if you can, even if it means
buying on credit as you want to be happy with this bike for several years
don't you?.
Look at some second hand bikes, try ebay, and ask our opinions if unsure of
them bearing in mind we can only offer a general opinion without seeing the
bike up close.

Maybe because fake-mountain-bike-style bikes are all that is sold at that
price, maybe because he wants to ride up mountains.

If the original poster can't find a suitable second hand bike, look for
the least mountain-bikey thing you can find (i.e. not massive great chunky
overweight tubes (which are styled that way because expensive mountain bikes
use large tubes of much lighterweight material), and no suspension (again,
cheap bikes have it to look like expensive ones, not because cheap suspension
is worth having). This is true even if you actually want to ride up mountains,
people rode off road before specialist mountain bikes were invented, and
just looking more like a specialist mountain bike won't help.

If you actually want to ride it off road, leave the knobbly tyres on, if
you want to ride it on the road smoother tyres will help, but you'll be
pushed to get even a not very good new bike and a change of tyres under
100 quid.

If you are in Cambridge, Mike's Bikes have some plausible looking cheap
bikes ("student special", less than £100 with lock and lights) as well
as very nice looking 3000 pound bikes, and a range in between. But look at
the secondhand ones on the stall on the market too.
