  1. Hello all,

I'm a new reader of this NG and despite my trepidations I'm diving on in and making with the posting. I have never "done" a low-carb lifestyle until this year. My boyfriend and I began on January 4th with induction. I'm not sure what his goals are, we haven't talked about it much beyond, "I want to feel and look better."

I came into this weighing somewhere in the neighborhood of 210 to 220 lbs. I made the mistake of not weighing myself before we started. To be honest, we didn't own a scale then so it wasn't that I neglected to do so or forgot or something ridiculous like that. We have since purchased a bathroom scale that shall be used henceforth so that if it's wrong, at least it'll be consistently wrong (or at least as consistent as a bathroom scale can be).

My ultimate goal is to get all the way back down to less than 140 lbs. Although I'm using 140 as my goal weight for the purposes of the RoboChallenge I certainly wouldn't mind being 135 lbs.again. I'm 32 years old and five foot, three inches tall. When I tell people how much I weigh I'm usually met with disbelief. I must "carry it well" or something. Anyway, my weight goal is now stated, public knowledge... and I also now have butterflies. Heh.

We are keeping very, very closely to our induction limits on carbs. I've dropped about 7-8 lbs already just in what I assume is water weight since I ramped up my water consumption so very much once we got started. I'm easily drinking 42 oz. a day at this point and always need to pee! I say that I assume this is water weight because I haven't noticed the stinky ketosis breath yet so logically I must not be in deep ketosis.

I haven't even started any sort of exercise regimen yet. My boyfriend has. He's working out at the gym at his office before he comes home in the mornings (we live an over-night life). I've never worked out well or consistently or with any kind of enjoyment. Bleh. But I know it's a part of a healthy lifestyle, which means I'd feel better which means... I need to find something I like. I keep reading post (Roger's mostly) that advise people to develop a good cardio workout and a separate weight training workout. We have a stationary bike in the apartment that I'm making a point to use, even if for only a short time here in the beginning, every night after my boyfriend heads out to work. I figure that's cardio, right? Right. What we don't have is any sort of weight training... Stuff. Weights, bench, whatever. We don't have it and if we did there'd be no place to put it because this apartment barely holds the stuff we have currently. I'm sure if I search the archives I'll find suggestions for workarounds to that situation, though.

Argh. I'm babbling now. I'm not sure what else I should include in here. Anyway. Hello and stuff to everyone out there!

Oh. Please let me know if I should post in plain text or continue to use a HTML/rtf format. If I've broken a rule by posting so, I'm sorry. I couldn't find anything in the FAQ about posting preferences or practices. I did look!

USENET is a text-based forum, so that would be best.

  6. Greetings. Looks like you and I are starting from around the same
place--and have other little details in common. Very close in age, I
have the same thing with 'carrying my weight well'--which doesn't mean
I have to like it--and I also didn't weigh myself at the start. Still
haven't. *shudder* And hey, I've worked my share of tech support jobs.

plain text, please - and thanks for asking.

as for weight lifting equipment, i live in a small apartment and i use
dumbbells and a swiss ball (functions fine as a bench). you don't need
a lot of equipment; in fact, you can work out with things around the
house if you have to. check out krista's page if you haven't already:

When you do the start/current/goal stats, the "goal" should be your
real long term goal (like 135). The robochallenge goal is calculated
as the first "current" it sees, minus the monthly goal (5 lbs in your
case, it's "montly-goal" not "monthly goal" - software isn't as
flexible as real people), giving you a monthly goal for this month of
    193 lbs (198 - 5).

The robochallenge doesn't care what you put for start and goal, it
only looks at current. It *records* start and goal, but doesn't *use*
    them.

Oops, spoke too loudly. RC supports "monthly goal:" now :-P At least,
    it should, we'll see ;-)

  10. That's because the fat get distributed all over the body... like fingers, toes,
a little bit here, a little bit there...

anyway - welcome to you and your bf, hope your plan works out alright!

    🙂 Typical programmer!

  12. Try some bodyweight movements...squats, pushups, dips, etc. you can use
chairs and whatnot to make things easier at first. Yes, your bike works
counts as cardio...so keep at that. Start small, work up over time. Most
importantly, make it a consistent thing in your life. Cut out time for it.
Oh, the really really most important thing is to get your eating under
control. Then exercise will provide a very nice boost that both you and
    your bf will enjoy!!!

I say don't worry at all about ketosis....worry about scale changes or
inches. As long as LC is reducing appetite and allowing you to enough eat
less, you should drop pounds. The idea is to get the carb level where it
needs to be to make sure that happens. No need to go lower than what allows
    that to happen.

  17. Now I get to sound like an idiot and ask stupid stuff.

When you say bodyweight movements do you mean just performing the movements
over and over again to get used to/perfect the proper way to do them before
introducing weights to the motion? Because if that's what you mean, I can't
disagree that it's a good idea. I have no idea what I'm doing.

I'm a bit trepidatious about the use of weights. I had a recurring ganglian
cyst in my left wrist for years (that I haven't seen in about a decade) that
weakened that wrist quite a bit and apparently caused muscle and/or joint
damage that flares up when I turn it the wrong way or when it's really cold,
etc. Again, I'm hoping that with the application of the "Start Small" plan
I'll be able to strengthen the joint and muscles without pain. Is that
faulty reasoning or am I on the right track?

    Thanks for your reply!

    Yes.

Normally, you'd only have to post new start/current/goal numbers, and
the start and goal shouldn't need to change (unless you change your
long term goal, I guess). The other things you add to the sig get
remembered, so you only have to add them if/when you want to change
them (like, first post of the month to set your goals, or if you
change your URL, etc). It's OK to always have them there, but it's
    not necessary.

Basically, yes. Part of the reason for doing them is that you build muscle
    and strength, too!

You know how to squat, right? Remember the girly pushups people used to do,
with the knees on the ground? Or, you can do pushups between two chairs, or
on some stairs. You can take two chairs and do dips. You can do leg lifts
of various sorts...ab crunches, toe raises, etc.

    || I'm a bit trepidatious about the use of weights.

Nothing wrong with that....everyone is at first.

    I had a recurring
    || ganglian cyst in my left wrist for years (that I haven't seen in
    || about a decade) that weakened that wrist quite a bit and apparently
    || caused muscle and/or joint damage that flares up when I turn it the
    || wrong way or when it's really cold, etc. Again, I'm hoping that
    || with the application of the "Start Small" plan I'll be able to
    || strengthen the joint and muscles without pain. Is that faulty
    || reasoning or am I on the right track?

That would be a proper way to think of it. It certainly can't hurt to ask
your doctor, either (recommended). Start small...just light weights and
give your wrist time to get stronger.

    successes here!

Wow! That's awesome progress. I had a daughter 9 1/2 months ago and am
STILL 175 lbs. That's actually 5 lbs heavier than after the first week of
    delivering her!

I'm 5' 3", too. Do you have any pictures of your weightloss progress?

My goal is to get to 125 - 135, but heck at this point, just getting below
    150 would rock my world!!

    Felicia, welcome to the ASDLC!!
