Now. I wouldn't ride it like that, especially on the front. It's bin fodder if the casing distorts like that. You should be able to find suitable tyres for ~$35 each.

small bulge.

how long would one have before this became a serious issue?
i've dropped the pressure in the rear tyre for now and it makes a big
difference to braking!

i would like to replace it ASAP(as funds allow =)
whats a good tyre & tube combo to run for phat barstards like me 130+kgs
budget currently run @ 100$. i'd like to replace both front and rear and
keep the current front tyre & tube as a spare 😉
as i don't have any spares at present...

I wouldn't call that a small bulge. Same thing happened to a tyre of
mine years ago because the brake pad was rubbing on it.

If I were you I'd replace it NOW! Not that I'm trying to be alarmist but
I don't reckon you can put a time on how long it will last and
personally, I wouldn't want to be riding it when it goes.

I had a spoke pierce a tube a few years ago because of a worn out rim
tape and after the initial gunshot sound the tyre came off the rim
immediately and locked up the rear wheel, going down a 60kph hill.
It's not pleasant.

I guess you could get a $5 note or similar and stick that between the
tube and the bulge which _might_ help temporarily to prevent the tube
blowing out through the tyre?

As for tyre recommendations, I'm not sure, but any new tyre is bound to
better than the buggered one.

I'm interested to hear what others with experience havbe to say about
the likelihood of that tyre dying.

had a 26x2.125 blow out coming down the towoomba range once. not fun.
new rim, new chain, new cluster, new brakes too =(

So long as you've got plenty of spokes and strong rims I don't think
weight is an issue for the tyres and tubes (I'm sure someone will
correct me if I'm wrong).

I've been using Conti GP 23mm tyres for a couple of years now and I run
them at 120psi without any problems.

The main reason I've been using those is because I can get tham for $60
a pair and their all black (I'm not really into colourful tyres 🙂

I have recently been converted to the Continental Ultra GatorSkins by a LBS
sales guy who says he gets 4,000 + kms from them. A bit different from the
1000k's and as many punctures I got on the cheap 'n' nasty colored tyres I
was using before and only ten bucks different in price.

ended up getting the conti ultrasport, $25 from bikeexpress in adeladie.
was a bit fiddly to fit, but all went fairly smoothly =D

No probs, they do interstate delivery :embarrassed: I followed your link and found out. Slick site - maybe there'll be no retail shopfronts in a few years, just mobile mechanics and mailorder portals. No testrides allowed, no handling of the goods, the perfect retail environment 🙁
