  1. I am toying with the idea of doing some Audaxes this year. i've already
established through previous posts that my Galaxy is an adequate tool for
the job. I just have to get around to selecting a ride or two.
I'm aware that the physical demands are not in direct proportion to the
distance travelled and am wondering how much more demanding a 150km or even
a 200 km audax would be compared with a 100km ride. I have no problems
completing 100km but have yet to attempt 150km.

The rides that I've flagged as possibilities are:

    Humber Bridge 100
    Yorkshire Wolds 150 (from Boothferry)
    Easingwold 100
    Wetherby 100 (Starting Fairburn)
Sleepy North Notts Villages (Alfreton 150)
Darlington 200...this goes to Hartside I think and I've a good idea of where
the route will take me - I'm tired already :-)

Does anyone have knowledge of any of the rides? Are there any tips for
    preparing for audaxing?

I've started this year's riding with steely determination. I've done 60
miles split between the two windiest Saturdays of the year so far. Been to
the Tan Hill Inn from Reeth and rode home to Leeds from Mill Bank above
Sowerby Bridge. Both rides were exhilerating in very different ways.

I had previously done one ride over 100km when I did my first near 200km
ride. The 150km ride was a learning experience.. I got too hot and
suffered for the last 40km (which was mercifully flat). So I was nervous
about the longer and hillier ride. But it is all about pacing and
knowing what is right for you.

I managed it (192km) with little problem in 12 hours which is within the
Audax time limits. I was running on empty at the end though. If 100km is
no problem then you should easily do 150 and with a bit of care 200 will
    be achallenge that is achievable.

I've been snowed under with work but am determined to get out and moving
ASAP (so why am I sitting here?)

  3. I did one of the 100km Norwich BUG rides early last year (see other
recent thread on organised rides from Norwich) and it was a doddle -
ideal for a beginner. Very flat Norfolk.
    Mine's a Dawes Galaxy Tour.
This Saturday did the 'Hopey New Year' ride around Derbyshire/Staffs
moors and I found it really hard going - hilly and wind on the nose
all the way. My personal slowest. OK so I'm 2 stone overweight but I
thought at least 1 stone might be cycling muscle, but apparently not,
    just fat.
So if you are new to it I'd say start with a flattish 100 perhaps.
Longer distances for me it seems that comfort - esp. saddle, can become
the weakest link so perhaps you should build up to it in stages.
    cheers

I did the Yorkshire Wolds 150 last year out of Boothferry, Goole. It was
in September last year but the organiser said it was moving to June. I
notice that the name of the oraniser is different this time but I expect
a similar route as the club is very small and all of the members were
manning the 2 controls. The route was almost completely pancake flat and
we had no wind. The group I was with, the only group was pretty fast, we
finished in less than 6 hours, I would have preferred a slower pace. I
knew I was capable of ridng such distance and I chose this event as I
know the area, in the preceeding summer I'd ridden 200km on my own
several times, at a pace fast enough to be within the time limit, I just
build up my miles as the months pass. If you want to come for a ride
with me sometime you are more than welcome, I am out nearly wvery
weekend doing about 50 miles at this time of year. I have some big
events planned this year, 200miles in 24 hours, Dawn til Dusk, Leeds -
Sheffield (ToB 2004, stage 2) plus my usual bread and butter rides such
as Leeds - Hartlepool. I may do Leeds-Hartlepool-Leeds if I get good
    enough.

On Jan 30th I am leading a C+ forum ride from City Square (09:15),
about 50 miles going east to Tadcaster via Fairburn, Sherburn etc. You
are welcome to come along, these are sociable rides, no one is dropped
too far. You have my email address. I must do that Tan Hill loop again
when the there is no snow. My loop from Richmond over The Stang first
then up to Tan Hill was about 50 miles.

I am also thinking about the Humber Bridge 200, Brimham Rocks 200 (out
of Fairburn), Easingwold 200 and The Hartside but I may do my own ride
out of Hartlepool. I'd be keen on having a mate to ride with, I was
dissappointed with the YW200 as the group was not very sociable. It was
faster than I wanted but I did manage fine. Had there been a slower
group I would have been in it but I didn't sign up for the ride to be on
my own all day, I can do that anytime.

For got to say it is unlikely I'll do the Boothferry rides this year as
they fall on June 12th which is my birthday and I am thinking of the
Wicklow 200 or doing the 200miler on that day.

It's really a question of 'just' keeping going.
My first Audax was a flat 300km.

I'd already done 200km by myself.

I've not done any of these, sorry.

Know you body. Know your bike. Build up to longer distances gradually.
Don't let any minor discomfort escalate to a major pain, unless you've
    completed 90% of a ride.
Don't let others dictate your pace.
Drink enough, eat enough, don't get too hot, too cold or too wet.

Think ahead and plan what you're going to do at a checkpoint before you
    arrive.
"Toilet, refold route sheet, eat, drink, refill bottles, don night
    attire, mount lights..."

    Just do it!
    Enjoy it!

    Thank helpers.

I must have been the world's worst athlete but completed 3 SR series
    (200, 300, 400 & 600km in a season) and somehow scraped round the Great
    Eastern 1000km...

    Good luck!

Lots of riding is all there is to it. Gradually build up your distances.
Allow yourself plenty of recovery time between long rides.

On the actual ride, remember to keep to a pace that is comfortable for
you - avoid the temptation to go at the pace of a faster, stronger rider
or group ("it's not a race!"😉 - and remember to eat and drink plenty,
and take adequate rest stops. If you remember all this, you should find
    200km well within your capabilities.

A year ago, 50km was about my limit. By the end of last summer, I had
completed a 250km ride. This year I shall be taking part in my first 300
and 400km rides (just sent off the entry forms) and, time permitting, I
hope to get a 600 in before the end of the season. I would /really/ love
to have a go at LEL, but unfortunately it falls at a bad time for me.

  8. Which 400 are you riding Dave? I have entered the Denmead.

  9. Which 400 are you riding Dave, I have just entered the Denmead.

  10. What route are you following from Leeds through fairburn?

Ravensthorpe CC are going to Selby via Castleford so may be en route,

We leave Ravensthorpe @ 09.00 so Castleford for tea about 10.00 ish,
about half ten Fairburn to Selby?
