  1. How often do most of you weigh yourselves? I know that weight can fluctuate
daily (especially for women due to changes in hormone levels, etc.) and that
can be nerve-racking for some people, but I find it works as motivation for
me even when there's a slight gain. What about the rest of you?

  2. I weigh daily as a reminder to keep to the plan, even though its pretty much
routine these days. Women do have special issues- I'd only lose before my
TOM, and being pre menopausal, never know when that might be.

I'm feeling NO symptoms of the change, I wonder if its because of all the
    soy based products I'm eating-

I do it almost every day. I have been at normal weight for almost 1.5
years. I have hard times recalling a single person who is at normal
weight and has hard times handling reality, that is, scale
display. Looks like most people who are afraid of the scale are not at
    normal weight.

Daily. I have about 2-3 years of daily weigh-ins on graph paper.

    Quoted message said:

IMHO that's a reason to weight daily AND RECORD IT. Seeing
fluctuations on the graph makes you realize that the individual daily
weighings are not important - it's the long term trends that count.

Graphs also help you tune your diet, and monitor water retention.

    Real example: http://www.delorie.com/health/20030724-chart.png

So on that chart, which diet (half) looks like a better plan? How
would you figure this out without a graph?

I am 8 days into Induction and have no idea when I'm going to weigh
myself. It's extremely hard for me to lose and my body tends to hold
onto the same weight for dear life. One of my last failed attempts at
Atkins involved my weight staying exactly the same throughout 2-week
induction *to the half-pound*... on a digital scale. And no, the scale
    wasn't at fault.

I'm using a pair of reference jeans for now. When they're appreciably
loose, I'll try the damn scale.

(I used to weigh daily and average weekly when I was on phentermine...
but phen was the only thing that ever produced consistent weight loss
for me, so weighing was fun.)

I weight myself every day. I record the weights in fitday, and I don't mind
    seeing my water fluctuations.
I'm the opposite of most people, I like to know how much I weigh every day.

FWIW, the National Weight Control Registry ( http://www.nwcr.ws/ ) has
studied "successful losers" to identify behaviors that are common in
successful weight loss programs. Based on their studies, "frequent
weighing" was identified as one of the behaviors commonly used by people who
have been successful in losing substantial weight.

As others have noted, daily weighing can be useful and motivating...as long
as you don't get too freaked out by the normal day-to-day ups and downs.

I weigh every morning. I tend to lose, then keep bouncing between the
low weight and 1-3 lbs higher, then back to the low, etc., until I lose
again, which tends to take a long time for me. If I didn't weigh every
day, I might miss the LOW one and think I haven't lost anything :-) For
instance, I reached a new low just TODAY :-) Also, since I am in peri-
menopause, my TOM is somewhat irregular -- if my weight suddenly jumps
up and it's not due to excess sodium, it's a clue that it's going to
    start within a few days.

As I explained in a previous post, I like to think of weighing as being
similar to putting the body in a colander -- once the waste is drained
off, what's LEFT is what I'm most interested in, so whenever I reach a
new low, even if it's only for one day, THAT'S the weight I claim
because I KNOW that if it goes up again 1-3 lbs, that 1-3 lbs is only
water or other waste forms, NOT fat. It's all a matter of perception.

I also think it is incorrect for them to say "low-energy".
"sufficient-energy" would be better since it would sustain their weight.
    "excessive-energy" would imply over consumption.

I do think low-fat with exercise can be healthy for a lot of people.

  11. I'll be honest, I used to weigh myself all the time. Like every day for a
while. I now don't weigh myself much at all. I roll out of bed in the
morning and look at my naked self in the mirror. Well sometimes I have
underwear on, and can guess how much I weigh within a pound.

Congratulations on your new low! I think you're absolutely right Saffy,
especially with women anyhow. My pattern of loss has changed somewhat (as
expected), similar to what you describe. I haven't plateued yet really, but
last month and in Nov. I noticed that I'd reach a new low and then put water
weight on and fluctuate 1-3 lbs until it gets to another low. At the same
time my periods were kind of whacky too. Now in January my weight loss
pattern seems like I'm kind of whooshing a bit. If it continues to go as
quick as it has in the last 2 weeks, I think I'll have to get my thyroid
checked again. (if you recall, my thyroid symptoms fluctuate between hyper
and hypo since the summer when I went to the hospital) and I don't want to
    end up there again.

    Hi Curt,
I play a little guessing game with myself before I fall asleep now. I try
and guess what my weight will be in the morning - I find that I too am
getting pretty accurate at predicting these things. I figure though, thats
because we know our patterns and whatnot since we weigh or used to weigh
daily, whereas others who only weigh once a week or so, may not be able to
really predict whats going on with their weight as we do.

Daily. Sometimes at night also before bed, when I play the game "guess
what I will weight in the morning". Seriously, it's interesting to see
how much your weight can vary during the course of the day, so you don't

I would suspect that people who are freaked out by normal weight
fluctuations are unlikely to successfully lose weight and keep it off.
Perhaps that's why you do not see many of them among those successful
    losers whom you mentioned.

That sounds like a very valid statement. Also, in my case, I need the
constant feedback on my current weight to adjust my eating habits. After
managing to lose 60 pounds in a year, I managed to gain about 20 of it
back in three years, by a combination of poor eating and not weighing
myself (which would have shown the results of my poor eating habits, and
allowed me to correct them). Another part of my problem was not buying
enough new smaller clothes, resulting in baggy clothes thathad the room
to allow me to comfortably gain back the weight. I've managed to take
that 20 pounds back off in half a year, and want to lose another 15 or
20 pounds. I probably won't know how much until I get there. It is
difficult to predict what weight will be optimum for me (meaning
healthy, possible to maintain, and something I am happy with).

  20. I've noticed that, since I started doing Atkins, I'm much more aware of even
small changes in my body. In 1999, I lost 64 lbs on the Atkins woe, and was
so in tune with my body that, if I cheated and ate a small order of
McDonald's fries, I knew it would "cost" me a gain of exactly 3 lbs...every
single time. The way some people can recite from memory the carb counts of
various foods, I could predict with almost uncanny accuracy how much weight
a given food would cause me to gain.

It's been a while since I paid close attention, though, and really listened
to my body. If I had kept listening, I wouldn't be in the predicament of
having to start Induction again now.
