Wrap a piece of thin paper around it and make a mark along the edge in
order to get the circumference. Make a precise measurement of the
length of this line and divide by pi.

Did you remove the seatpost and look below the minimum insertion line?
That's where a lot of seatposts have the diameter stamped, and it tends to
get rubbed away.

catalog for this manufacturer for the appropriate year?

Yes I did look for the size in manufacturers web-site with no success.
I think I 'll just do what Dan suggested.

George: There are a number of people from bike shops who hang out here, so
if you tell us what model & year bike you have, somebody might know. For
that matter, there might simply be somebody who owns one who knows.
