I think I am pretty fit, and do a bit of riding.
However when I ride, my heart rate hits 95% of my max pretty fast when I hit
a climb.
But I don't feel completely knakered.
Is this normal ?

Whatever value you are using as your 'max' is too low.
If you used the 220-age formula, remember it's only
an approximate and often a [censored] estimate.
