The whole concept of cycling shorts is to eliminate multiple layers which will shift/rub causing discomfort. Go with the chamois sans underwear.

I agree, before I started using lycra shorts with the integrated padding I used normal underpants under jogging bottoms. After about 1 hour it felt like I had been given a chinese-burn on my "gentleman's holdall", if you know what I mean?

The padded shorts etc are a revelation IMHO.

Don't own any cycling bibs or tights with the chamois built in, but I wear cycling shorts (sans underwear) under plain tights and bibs with no problems at all.

I wear bib shorts with regular (no chamios) tights over the top quite often when I'm commuting to work in the morning. that way if it warms-up enough duirng the day I can lose the tights and just wear shorts on the way home. Works just fine and it's a bit warmer than wearing just the shorts with leg warmers.

I get real cold so I need lots of layers. My favorite setup is a skinsuit with chamois underneath bib tights without a chamois. That eliminates double straps and a waistband, plus it acts as a decent base layer top too.

At my school we had a long pants or else dress code. All year. That meant in the summer I would usually ride in with shorts under the jeans or whatever I had(in the mornings it was fine since it is never warm) Then on the way out I would stow the pants and either swap to some hiker shorts over them or just go straight lycra. The hiker shorts generally get less crude guy calls. I agree about the warmth in winter. The extra layer is great for the long snow rides.

I use the same combo as above for most of my cooler rides. Allows me to have a higher quality chamois and better fitting base layer. Can vary the weight of the tights and provides the capability for relieving one self without removing jersey/jacket. On the negative, however, I do have to readjust the outer tights sometimes after about 40-50 miles from riding down my hips slightly.
