  1. I am currently having a gear shift problems with a Nexus 8 equiped bike.
When in the "higher gears 8-5" shifting is smooth and faultless but when I
shift down from 5 to 4 the gears go into "neutral" and I get no drive at
all, this then applies to all the "lower gears 4-1". Sometimes after 2 or 3
revolutions of the pedals the problem rectifys itself, the drive returns and
I regain the use of all 8 gears for a period of time. I have checked the
gear adjustment alignment, chain tension and chain length and all of these
seem fine. Any advice on the problem would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

Best I can offer is "me too".

Shifting up is not problem from 1 - 8. Shifitng down however, 9 times
out of 10 it will be ok and then it will stick around 4.

The shifter has done its job and showing the desired gear but the
cable bunches up at the hub, it looks like something in the hub isnt
springing back when the tension is released. I then have to eaither
cycle the gears which will normally clear it or stop and manually
    change the gear.

I have seem to have no problem with the gear cable, the "cassette joint
pulley" rotates perfectly when I cycle through the gears but I still can not
get any drive when in gears 4-1.

  4. they all do that.
the unit needs to broken in slowly

I had an unusual Nexus-7 problem a week ago.

On that hub, the left cone was not locked in place. Any
internal gearbox will act 'screwy' when the bearing
adjustment gets loose, then tight, while riding.

Most hubs today are shipped with cones adjusted poorly but
at least locked in one place. Nexus are usually both
adjusted and locked properly. I don't know the history of
that hub, the bike was purchased used.

You do know to line up the two red dots with the shifter in
the middle position, right? Your symptom seems serious.

Do also ensure the cable moves freely. Check for kinks and
    oil the wire.

There could also be an problem with the sprocket itself not
being locked to the driver. Check that.
