  1. I always used to wear a helmet, but I stoped when it got stolen. I would
loop my lock through it's straps when locking up my uni, but someone
must have cut the straps to steal it. I never replaced it because I
don't like helmets, instead I wear my trusty bowler hat. But I should
really get a new helmet. Yeah Catboy, feel free to tease me.

  4. I always wear a helmet when riding, regardless of the terrain setting.
Part of it is because I won't risk my CPU when protecting it costs me so
little, and part of it is because I require a helmet on my son when he
rides, so need to lead by example.

  5. same.... While I was doing some ice-traisl near my hous my tyre slipped
off the rock I was gapping, I slid backwards and my head smashed into a
nearby tree...wouldn't have been very neat if I wasn't wearing a helmet.

  11. There's been a fair few helmet threads here in the past; this one is
especially interesting as it's already had four people posting incidents
where their helmets have come in very useful.

In fact, by the sound of it, at least three of them sound like they
would be either dead or severely injured if they hadn't been wearing
    helmets.

Thanks for posting those stories- it's stuff like that that can sway
newbies into getting padded up, and possibly save their lives too.

  12. I feel left out having no helmet-needing moments. I think I'm just
bottom heavy so I always land on my feet. My sister, however, took a
face plant when she was trying to learn. Luckily for her, the helmet
didn't really fit very well, so it slid down over her face as she was
being thrown forward. She had a bloody nose, but the helmet took the
real beating. She didn't really learn to ride after that.

A helmet is, by no means, a reason for you to intentionally try to use
the helmet for its primary function. It is just added insurance of your
survival, should you ever happen to fall, not an excuse to be dumb, and
try to put yourself in danger...

    *

The people who had similar incidents -without- a helmet aren't around to
post about their experiences. They're drinking through a straw as a
vegetable or outright dead. Just thought I'd point that out. There
aren't many situations where someone would say "man, I wish I had a
helmet for that crash". It's more like "mahhhn, jerh berrrrrrrrr
    <pleh>".

Personally, I wear a helmet for all trail riding. I don't wear one
usually for street, though, but that's because I currently ride a 20"
freestyle (so doing flat ground stuff). That'll change soon as soon as
I get a trials unicycle. My friend who's really getting into trials and
obstacles is actually upgrading helmets to a skate style with more
back-of-the-head protection, since his bike helmet leaves too much open.
The head is where your brain is, people!

  20. Good thread...

I always wear a helmet for Trials and MUni, and usually if im going on a
    long ride.

I've been saved my my helmet a couple of times, nothing really hard, but
    pleased I wear it!

I've got a MTB style helmet (I think - its like 'aerodynamic' with peak
and vent slots...) and am thinking about changing it for a pisspot
helmet... Dont know which is best. Dont think pisspots suit me though.
Humm... any hlemet is better than no helmet. 🙂
