If you had to choose one coast to do a tour on.......would you choose the west side or the east side of the island? And why? Also, is it better to go from north to south, or south to north (more to the point, which way does the wind blow......)?
We're organizing a tour for end of May to early June, and would like to spend about 10 days on the island. Looking for scenery, camping, and good beaches. We're also going to include Corsica in this tour as well, flying in and out of Nice, or into Nice and maybe out of Rome (or vice versa, depending on which way the wind usually blows). Any hints or advice welcome. Cheers! Peter
I would suggest looking at the www.wideopenroad.co.uk map on their website showing the route they (we, as I've signed on already) are taking, at least as a starting point. Maybe other groups have posted routes as well, but that's the only one I know of. I'm flying into Rome a week early then home (San Francisco, CA) out of Nice. Best price I found was US$744 total RT (got tix already) via Travelocity/British Airways. Price seems to go up sharply after end of May. SteveJ

Thanks for the tip Steve - I was just looking at that link when this email popped up. Another site has a tour going from north to south along the west coast....so who knows, maybe the wind is not much of an issue and both coasts are great.
You'll have a great time on Corsica. I spent ten days last April touring from Calvi to Bonifacio, hugging the coast the whole way to Propriano (if I remember correctly), and then to Zonza and down the east side to Bonifacio. Didn't go to Corte as there was still snow up in the mountains in April (lots of camping sites were closed as well).
I've done a fair bit of touring and consider that west coast of Corsica to be the highlight. You'll have a great time! Peter

I've toured nearly all of Corsica, having been there 3 times. I've toured about half of Sardinia. The interior and North East of Corisca, esp. Porto and Piana are the finest places in Corsica. It's very rugged and hilly but not much very steep. DO NOT cycle the Col de Bavella from the East. That's terribly difficult.
Do a Google search for Garry Lee Sardinia on Groups and you'll come on my account of my Sardinian tour.
Worth missing. The "famous" Costa Smeralda. It's very hilly, busy and not really worth seeing. The interior is brilliant.

Some sections of coast road along the west coast of Corsica between Calvi and Porto had the roughest or most patched pavement we encountered on our trip. My guess is that the main use for those routes is tour buses and other touring, so they've been given lower priority in the road-modernization program. But very scenic.

Anyone care to comment on which coast of Sardinia would be the most scenic, with good camprounds, and best for touring? Someone has to have been there.........
