Galdeano breaks collarbone in Tour of Germany crash
BERLIN, June 9 (Reuters) - Spaniard Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano fractured his collarbone
in a crash in Sunday's time trial of the Tour of Germany, race organisers said on
Monday. Gonzalez de Galdeano, who also needed stitches on a cut above his left eye,
should be able to resume training in a few days.
The ONCE rider, who won the Tour of Germany last year, was fighting for the overall lead
in Sunday's penultimate stage when he clipped the metal stand of a barrier lining the
road near the end of the individual time trial and fell.
Gonzalez de Galdeano will miss this year's Tour de France starting on July 5 because of
a six-month doping ban imposed on him by France's Council for Prevention and Fight
against Doping (CPLD).
The CPLD ruled in April to suspend the ONCE team leader from competitions organised by
the French Cycling Federation after traces of the banned drug salbutamol were found in
his urine following a doping test in last year's Tour.
Ruling body, the International Cycling Union (UCI) cleared him of any wrong-doing,
saying the Spaniard had a medical prescription to use the drug Ventolin, which contains
salbutamol, as an asthma treatment.
The UCI has questioned the CPLD ruling and asked the French body for clarification.
Australian Michael Rogers was leading the Tour of Germany going into Monday's
final stage.
The race was marred by the death of French rider Fabrice Salanson, whose body was
found in his hotel room in Dresden shortly before the start of Tuesday's first stage.
He was 23.
