  1. The other day a friend of mine showed me a letter he had posted to his address by mistake. It turned out to be a cheque for over 2000 sterling, addressed to an asylum seeker from Social Security. I saw it myself. That means someone is drawing in 500 pounds a week without even working, thanks to U.K. tax-payers.
I have nothing against immigrants coming to this country and working (and then being entitled to welfare). But I definitely draw the line at handouts doled out to people as soon as they cross the border.
Those of you who live in the U.K: Are we taxpayers being taken for a ride and how come the Government claims not to have money for troops in Iraq, schools and hospitals?
Please don't interpret this post as having anything to do with racism as I have friends from all countries, black and white. But I think this present situation of money for nothing is wrong.

This government is totally unable to deal with the asylum issue. In Glasgow there are areas where people from Eastern Europe, mainly asylum seekers, who are pending appeals (some going back 6 or more years). These people are housed in some of the worst housing schemes in the west of Scotland where drugs, gang culture and poverty are rife.

The houses allocated to the asylum seekers are owned by the local authority and there are people who have lived on these schemes their whole lives and have to actually go on waiting lists often for over 10 years to get one of these houses. Asylum seekers come in get a house and are expected to 'intergrate' with the community.

Next thing we know, Abdul gets stabbed in a 'racially motivated' attack. Racially motivated my [censored]. Its poverty motivated.

Yes, a family of four will be getting £500 a week and living rent free.

I wish i had £500 a week in my pay cheque and i have a mortgage, 2 kids, a wife, a car and a new race bike to buy.

I can see why some people get a bit [censored] at Bliars govt.

I am all for offering asylum to genuine causes but this is not how it should be done.

£500 a week is a lot higher than the national average wage - I would guess ?

This seems to be totally and utterly unfair.
Like your country - we have the same system where asylum seekers are given housing (free) benefits such as medical cards for free and they get an allowance (I don't have the exact figure they get per week).
They cannot seek work until their application for asylum has been approved and then a work permit is issued.
So effectively - we (the taxpayer) are footing this bill.
Like your country, our own citizens who cannot get housing are put on the county council house waiting lsits - they have be means tested to get a medical card also.

I wonder what constitutes an asylum seeker.
Are these people really fleeing religious persecution ?
Or are they economic asylum seekers ?

  5. Put it this way: I've travelled all over Europe and have friends in Eastern Europe and the Baltics. I've never been able to claim one cent in any country I travelled to. U.K. citizens are entitled to nothing overseas, so the only way ex-pats get established is by living on their own savings till they find a job. They have to work a minimum of 2 years till they get social security - which is only temporary.
An asylum seeker over here will get a State handout and will be allowed to work at the same time. In my area the authorities would be too scared to tackle such benefit fraud for fear of being called racists or getting into trouble. So, you wind up with an absolute haven for anyone who wants to come here for an easy option - hence the queues on the French border to leave France for England.
It's a pity how people have allowed themselves to be persuaded that if you object to any of this, you're a racist. Myself I'd like to see each person having a say in how his (or her) taxes are spent not just a black hole for the Government to draw from.

You complained the other day that your wife was unfairly treated by the Immigration Services, or rather investigated, which you considered an affront and obstruction of your reasonable claim.
Claims, reasonable or not, are claims to receive Government benefits, are they not?
Now you begin castigations without knowing the facts. I must say that I agree with you you entirely in general on this issue.
So the devolution of Scotland as a sovereign nation can support this scenario?
    Bollacks.
You are now speaking with forked tongue.

    oh Fred, my dear friend...

there is a whole world of difference between immigration and asylum. I have no forked tongue. My wife was not born in the UK so in order for her to live here she has to go through the British immigration system and entered the UK on a marriage visa that states very, very clearly that the sponsor (me) must provide means of abode and financial support 'without recourse to public funds' for a period of 12 months or until which time the govt is satisfied that she has leave to stay in the UK without restriction.

'public funds' are defined as state benefits of any kind including council tax and housing rebate as well as any form of unemployment benefit.

We were entitled to nothing from the govt (and wouldnt take it we were)..

She worked in the US embassy for years before she came here and was not persecuted on an ethnic or religious basis in her life.

there are few things in this life i know about but i do know the immigration system intimately.

finally, the Scottish parliment has no juristiction over this, its dealt with by the department of immigration and nationality directorate, green street, london.

she came here nearly 5 years ago now....😄

  11. My own view is that the Brits are being taken for a proverbial ride, but don't seem to appreciate how much that is the case. I've travelled to many different countries and, so far as I know, no country on the globe gives free benefits to people who haven't worked first - unless it's absolutely proven that individual is fleeing for his (or her life).
The first genuine asylum seekers I ever met were some exiles from Chile in the eighties but, since that time, the system has become open to abuse.
I've heard of supposed refugees receiving checks for 50 pounds and typing an extra "0" on the end with a typing machine. I've heard of those who use multiple addresses and multiple identities or claim every benefit going while doing night-shifts in factories. In Birmingham you've had local councils going bust due to influxes of asylum seekers and local taxes have been raised to pay for it.
I've never seen such abuses going on in Spain or France where public tax money is directed towards a fat 200 pound retirement pension and fed into public services.
People over here seem to have bought the idea that any objection to this situation is tantamount to racism - which is nonsense. My sincere belief is that if immigration abuse was quashed, we'd all have higher pensions, a free university education, higher social security and better public services.
I actually saw that cheque with my own eyes and imagine it's just the tip of the iceberg. Little wonder they're cutting back on university funding and the military budget.

Youre right, we have to tip-toe around this issue and act all politically correct for fear being branded a racist or accused of having a hidden agenda.

I am not racist in the slightest but i dislike it when i burst a bollock working trying to provide for my family when these people travel accross Europe risking thier lives to get to the UK bypassing rich countries on the way.

I think the EU states that anyone genuinely seeking asylum must stay in the first country that they arrive in. Thats why the Eye (sp?) family were deported to Germany from the UK when they tried so seek asylum here. They travelled through Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and France to get here....whats wrong with these countries???

    We are just too soft.

Remember the winlke pickers that got killed recently while working on the mud flats in England? Some of the people from China etc actually work for years in prostitution in order to save enough money to be smuggled into the UK they dont want to go to the US, France, Italy or Spain... They have thier sights firmly set on us. Illegal immigrants and asylum seekers target the UK because of its soft rules on handing out cash to people who dont work.

I get stung for hundreds of pounds every month to pay for this.

Charlie Clark and Blair need to sort this out.

  13. There is a lot of disinformation. The official line is that we are supposed to be making a profit out of immigration since so many immigrants work and pay taxes e.t.c. My own view is that simply isn't true and the statistics are misguided (they link illegal immigrants with foreign bankers and business investers to arrive at the figures).
There's probably something to be said for Republicanism where this is concerned. Republicans shift more responsibility to the individual for social security management and pensions so if immigrants were expected to pay into their own pensions and social security funding, the situation would be better. The same goes for all U.K. workers in fact.
Therefore, I don't mind people coming here if they're prepared to pay into the system first. Everyone should have a say in how their taxes are spent as well and certainly these taxes should be redirected towards a worker's welfare and pension in the future - not a black hole fund for illegal immigration.
However the case may be, I don't personally blame asylum seekers for taking advantage of the system we have since the fault lies with the politicians. Imagine if the Thai Government announced that any holidaying Brits or Americans or Australians who claimed they had arrived in Thailand to escape Blair and Bush (or something similar) should be entitled to free housing in Thailand and instant rights to welfare and health care. How many Brits do you reckon would wind up in Thailand? Count me in. I'd be there like a shot. And imagine if any Thais who objected were called racist for not agreeing?
Let's face it, it simply wouldn't happen.

It seems to me that your wife entered and stayed in the UK under The Aliens Act. Is this true?

The cause of all this trouble was the ridiculous 'Shengen agreement' 1995, that did away with border controls.

i dont think we call it the alien act here in the UK?...sounds like a merkian term.

I am quite surprised, nay, amazed that you think that the Aliens Act is American, no doubt they have their own statutes.

No, the first Act was passed in 1905, subsequent incremential changes were made over the years, as is the norm with matters of Law. No doubt, you have kept the relevant documentation, and if you peruse them, your case will only refer to certain sections of amendments. I met a woman in France when I raced there, and she came to live me in the UK. We were subsequently married.

From what, and the way you describe the conditions of your womans licence was very similar, but mine was some time ago. Well before the invention of bogus marriages, Shengen accord, false documentation, persecution??? etc.
I'm [censored] now, I've had my day. Hey, I believe that they moan about the dreech, and they miss their relations in London. What Ingratitude.

what a defeatist attitude...there are certain websites where you can find 18 year old Russian woman despertely looking for British visas....oh, i mean husbands.

god bless the third world, with resources like that we need never be hungry again..

  19. I think the same problems exist in Australia. We haven't completely broken free of our Colonial past. The generous and abused Social Security system here is surely a big contributing factor to our horrendously high levels of taxation.

GST here is 10%, on top of personal income tax rates reaching 47% plus 1.5% Medicare Levy (as if Levy is different to tax???) for high income earners. How does that compare to other countries?

  20. How about this? According to the local news they just caught a couple who were fraudulently claiming thousands of pounds in benefits. The claim was being made for children who weren't even resident in the U.K. and had actually died in Bangladesh several years before the claim was made.
To top it off, the couple involved were renting out property and receiving a sizable income which they didn't declare.
    Who is to blame?
Again I should point out that citizens from the U.K. are entitled to no social security payments even in European countries unless they've worked beforehand. Why is this the only country that alllows foreign nationals to milk benefits in this way? Even the U.S. doesn't follow such a system.
And here's another one: It now turns out that Europe has frozen one of Bin Laden's top man's bank assets after it turns out he was resident in England and claiming benefits while plotting jihad against the West.
As for Australia, I know they have a far more sensible system and don't just allow anyone into the country unless it's proven they're a genuine refugee.
