i dont think this is a major problem but it is really annoying. often when i start to sprint my back gears will jump up and down causing me to lose a lot of speed and acceleration. what's goin on???

Alot of possibilities including wore out chain/cassette, derailer mal adjustment or bent derailer hanger. Don't have a clue?,take it to a shop.

thanks, although the bike is fairly new so i dont think anything is worn out

Try www.parktool.com repair section for derailer adjustment. Possibly cable tension.
