  1. I am looking for recommenations for a running watch, both brand and
model. I am a new runner, with no specific requirements, just the
usual HRM functions and lap timing.

My local running store has some of the Timex Ironman models. I'd like
    to spend under $100.

Any specific brands that I should avoid, or are they all the
essentially the same? Is there a well-known best brand and/or model?

    Hey Reefer,
This has nothing to do with you post, I just wanted to tell you what a F*****
    AWSOME name that is!
    Reefer dude.

I have a timex ironman watch (30 lap model). The main thing I like about this
is the way they do the button layout: there's a big start/split button on the
face of the watch, which makes it easy to tap the button when you're on the
go. The buttons are start/split and stop/reset (you have to hold the stop
button to reset). This works much better than the traditional start/stop and
    split/reset configuration.

Regarding number of laps -- get at least 30, but 50 is better. For a 10x400
interval workout, you need to press the button 20 times (start and end of each
interval), so What means that even for that workout, you need 19 splits (not
    10). To store a 20x400 workout, you'd need more than 30.

One thing I don't like about some of the newer timex ironman watches is that
the band cannot be replaced. I'd suggest avoiding these versions (most of
these "sleek" models offer a velcro band as an option. The velcro band is quite
    nice)

Regarding heart rate monitors, I purchased the fitsense watch some time back,
and wouldn't recommend it (it's out of your budget and you will do better for
less money). Get something that has the basics -- average heart rate, and max
heart rate for the session are the main things you'll want to use. Some
watches can store heart rate zones and beep if you go out the zone, etc. Mine
can do this but I never used it. YMMV.

On that budget, you should have several good options.

The timex watches are great as lap timers. I have no idea what their HRMs are
    like.

  4. I have had the Ironman watches since their inception, beginning w/ the
original 8 lap and now using the Ironman 150 lap Sleek w/ "Target time"
feature. I have run many marathons and Ironman triathlons. This is the
greatest watch. You can set a target time for your event distance and
it will pace you along the way. super cool. try one. Stay away from the
velcro "fast wrap" bands. The buckle band on the sleek is very
    comfortable.

  5. I've still got the original Timex Ironman Triathlon and it works great. I've
had to replace the band once or twice but love the watch. As someone else
mentioned, the button layout is excellent. As for heart rate monitors, don't
know, don't have one, don't want one.

Take it off when you pull your weeone, and that'll never happen (again) to you.

    You question re:

Just kick back, chill off, and grab, with me,
Over at the Gridlock Grille, a chilly

If the band breaks you'll hear me shout, "Aww [censored]. My watch band broke!"
At the same time I'm thinking, "Great! I get to buy a new watch!"

Just wait until you get married. You'll see what I'm talking about. ;-)
