    In answer to your questions.

    1. The NoComs have won many road races in Europe Canada and the USA. The
    OLN-Outdoor Life Network will be hosting a one hour special in April about
    Johnny NoCom® and The Fastest Stock Bike in the Known Universe©. There is a
    15 minute in the show about all the race victories Team NoCom® has won
    worldwide. Watch the OLN special and you see for yourself.

    2. My understanding is race results will be posted at VeloNews, WISIL,
    A.R.B.R. and BROL for the 2005 season. Currently we are all living in 2004
    not 2005. You will find out 2005 Team NoCom® racing details when the 2005
    racing season begins.

    3. There are many Team NoCom® racers. If you buy one of the Johnny NoCom®
    Fastest Stock Bike in the Known Universe© calendars from the Johnny NoCom®
    web site coming soon you will see who the elite team members are.

    The NoCom is about the same weight as a Reynolds 531 tubing road bike,
    and its weight could be reduced to the 21-22 pound (ca. 10 kgf) range if
    rim brakes were used instead of discs.

    What most people overlook is that there are very few recumbent riders
    that are close to professional class fitness and ability. Most recumbent
    riders will not climb fast enough for the aerodynamic advantage of their
    bike [1] to overcome the weight, drivetrain friction (and possibly
    rolling resistance) handicaps on all but very modest grades. However,
    put a rider capable of maintaining a power output of 400+ watts on a
    NoCom, and the NoCom will be faster than a state of the art road bike up
    to a certain grade.

    Whether or not this grade magnitude where the upright gains the
    advantage would be great enough for the lightweight lowracer (such as
    the NoCom) to be competitive (or faster overall) in a typical mountain
    road racing stage with its greater speed elsewhere (assuming
    professional class riders) is a question that can not be answered with
    the data available. One further complication to take into account is
    that the upright rider can benefit by changing from sitting to standing
    and back, giving certain leg muscles a partial rest.

    [1] Only true for some recumbent designs. The most popular recumbent
    bicycle type by sales, the compact wheelbase (e.g. BikeE, Sun EZ-1)
    should be expected to have somewhat more drag than an upright rider on
    the drops (and possibly more than a rider the hoods).

  6. As John Stossel says "Give me a Break!". A Reynolds 531 frame? If NoCom is state of the art, then comparing it to a like bicycle would mean looking at something like a Scott CR1 which properly built is HALF the weight of the rim braked NoCom.

    The added efficiency of a direct chain drive with no idler and return tube only increases the disadvantage of the NoCom. The hysteresis losses from the very long reaction length of a NoCom is another problem.

    There is little space for water bottles on a NoCom. Forget a hydration pack too. I'm sure something can be made but its a kludge.

    Recumbents have their place but in racing, they will never compete with regular bikes.

    Plenty of races have been won on Reynolds 531 frame bicycles, and the
    times (over the same stages) are not that much slower, especially when
    modern training methods are taken into account. [1]

    MAYBE. Until someone obtains some actual numbers using the combination
    of power measurements at the crank and the rear hub, we will have to
    speculate on how much of a disadvantage this is. It would also be
    instructive to measure the torsional resistance to pedaling forces on
    both the NoCom and a carbon fiber frame typical of those used in UCI racing.

    There is room for a hydration pack inside the frame, accessed through
    the seat opening where it does not affect the aerodynamics.

    PURE SPECULATION. There is not enough data available to prove either
    recumbent superiority or recumbent inferiority. Anyone claiming
    otherwise is presenting opinion as fact. Lets us leave that behavior for
    the less honorable activities of marketing and politics.

    It's hard even then to compare these things. Except on the steepest
    climbs, the limits to cycling are mainly aerodynamic. That means that if
    rider A (Axel?) did a relatively flat 10km ITT on a Scott CR1, and rider
    (Bauer?), putting out the same amount of power as rider A, did the TT on
    a 1980s steel Pinarello but with a set of first-generation Scott aero
    clip-on bars (I'm guessing about 23 pounds total weight), there would be
    no contest: aero bar guy should win by a clear margin. Unless rider B
    has the flu or something, or just didn't want it that day.

    Aero vincit omnia. Unless some component of this drivetrain has rusted
    in place, its efficiency will make virtually no difference when
    comparing it to a stock upright bike. Indeed, as a thought experiment,
    put Axel on a delta-frame track bike, which has the most efficient
    geared drivetrain known to cycling. Now put Bauer on some recumbent with
    a ridiculous drivetrain, maybe a Rohloff with chain idlers.

    It won't matter. On the flats, the 'bent will put the track bike in the
    shade, at least once it catches up to the upright's acceleration
    advantage.

    There is enough data out there to make some general assertions, and even
    to run the data through some of the online performance calculators and
    get some meaningful answers. But in general, here are the principles:

    -well-designed recumbents, that is, ones that exploit the large
    potential aero advantage of the design, are much faster on flat terrain
    than conventional bikes, or even TT-optimized conventional bikes.

    -faired recumbents are the fastest human-powered vehicles on the planet.

    -when it comes to the hills, I don't know of any aerodynamically
    advantageous design that is close to the UCI weight limit. Over a
    serious course, this makes for a measureable time penalty for equivalent
    riders. The situation is actually worse than it seems: recumbents are
    already as light as they can be, with no legal restriction on their
    lightness. Many standard bikes have already hit the weight limits with
    off-the-shelf components, and various "light bike" projects have come up
    with machinery weighing pounds less than the UCI minimum.

    -the less compromised a recumbent becomes for racing, the more
    compromised it usually is for just riding around. Minimal turning
    radius, poor visibility, rotten in-traffic maneuverability, can't ride
    no-hands, etc. By contrast (and this is the oft-overlooked benefit to
    the UCI rules) you or I could take any bike in the pro peloton and
    happily ride it to work, on a club ride, or even do a day of couriering
    with it. At worst, I might want to swap out the wheels for something on
    the durable end of what the peloton uses, but that's about it.

    laid-back than usual to reduce wind drag--"supine" is often
    used to describe it. This page has the same picture, plus

    For outdoor races like Paris-Limoges, a more upright seating
    position was used, as in this picture of Morand:

    that Morand was often dropped on hills and says that he did
    not win that day--but it fails to mention that he'd won the

    If you take the defaults (which auto-change tires and the
    weight of the bike), it predicts these speeds for the same
    157 pound rider putting out 160 watts:

    16.3 mph diamond upright, mountain bike
    17.1 mph lwb recumbent, under, commuter
    18.5 mph swb recumbent, under, commuter
    19.4 mph diamond upright, hands on drops, "racing"
    20.5 mph diamond upright, triathlon bars
    21.2 mph swb recumbent, above, "racing"
    22.3 mph diamond upright, superman position
    23.1 mph lowracer recumbent, above, "racing"

    lwb = longwheelbase
    swb = shortwheelbase
    under = under seat steering
    above = above seat steering

    When you move the mouse pointer to the various recumbents,
    explanatory diagrams will pop up for the less familiar
    models.

    What's interesting is that the more common recumbents with
    the more upright seating style are actually predicted to be
    slower than a traditional touring bike.

    True, Faure mostly raced on tracks. But the tiny number of
    riders on recumbents won numerous other road events before
    being banned--Morand, for example, won the 1933
    Paris-Limoges.

    I suspect that the much steeper modern road courses would
    hurt recumbents.

    On the other hand, the recumbents always raced solo against
    uprights that used peloton drafting tactics--when the solo
    recumbent rider was in front, he had no team to share the
    work. A team of recumbents drafting each other would
    probably do amazingly well on a road race.

    (Of course, modern recumbents are often so aerodynamic that
    drafting doesn't work too well, so they might instead end
    the familiar sight of tight packs.)

    And some reports even indicate that recumbents can do quite
    well on uphills. Part of the problem is that there's so
    little incentive for a good climber to devote himself to
    using a bicycle banned by UCI regulations. We don't know
    what someone like Lance could do if he decided to lie back
    and enjoy himself. Only literally second-rate (second
    category) riders rode recumbents before the ban.

    I rode my Earth Cycles Sunset Lowracer in a small peleton [1] with
    another Sunset (tail-fairing equipped), an Optima Baron lowracer, a Razz
    Fazz lowracer, and a Ross Festina lowracer (tail-fairing equipped), and
    the drafting aid was quite considerable. I was the tallest seated rider
    in the group, with the top of my head 3 feet above the ground.

    On another occasion I was in a quite effective paceline with a Wishbone
    RT dual 406-mm wheel lowracer, a tail-fairing equipped Sunset, a short
    rider on a Lightning Stealth with tail-fairing, and a HPVelotechnik
    Speedmachine semi-lowracer.

    When you move the mouse pointer to the various recumbents,
    explanatory diagrams will pop up for the less familiar
    models.

    What's interesting is that the more common recumbents with
    the more upright seating style are actually predicted to be
    slower than a traditional touring bike.

    This agrees with my experience - recumbents with upright seating
    positions and bottom brackets lower than the seat are slower than
    drop-bar uprights on flat ground unless full or partial fairings are used.

    BikeE (now out of business) sold a compact wheelbase design that is one
    of the more commonly seen recumbents. These bikes have a very high seat
    and low bottom bracket, and would typically be 2-3 mph slower than a
    drop-bar road bike for a particular rider. Unfortunately, the BikeE
    marketing people claim a significant performance advantage over a road
    bike, leading to disappointment and a negative overall impression of
    recumbents for some purchasers.
