Advice Q-factor (tread) spec?

  1. I put a triple crank on my road bike (56 steel frame). Now my right-side
    pedal is 6 mm farther from the frame centerline than my left-side pedal.
    Crankset is Campy Racing T (unknown vintage), replacing Daytona double.

    I tried the "triple" BB, but that didn't change much. It's only 4 mm longer,
    and 2 mm on each end. Doesn't recenter the crank arms at all.

    I can move the cleats on my Sidis to compensate, but I use those shoes on my
    TT bike which has a Daytona double with perfect Q-factor alignment.

    I'd like to get the crankarms to be the same distance from the frame again.
    What can I do?

    Should I just ignore it? Is this typical with triples?

    If it's not causing any issues, I'd ignore it. An awful lot of people go
    from mountain bikes, with "Q" factors all over the map, to riding a road
    bike, where the "Q" factor can be dramatically narrower... with no ill
    effect. I just checked, and even my double (compact) FSA carbon cranks are
    offset more on the chainring side than the opposite.

  5. I looked at branfordbike.com, and they don't show different left-side crank
    arms for doubles and triples. http://www.branfordbike.com/crank/crank7.html.
    My downloaded Campy parts catalogue backs you up, though, with different
    parts numbers for Veloce left-side arms from a double or triple.

    FC-VL791 for double and FC-VL797 for triple. Interesting that the triple
    part # is 6 higher than the double #, since 6 mm is the difference in
    Q-factor.

    Any other online source to try for the triple crank arm? My LBS

    Generally I think people make way too much of Q-factor. IMO the "issue" was
    invented by bike magazine and advertising writers scraping the bottom of the
    barrel for something to write about. I think most people would never notice the
    difference unless you told them, even those who make a big stink about it. And
    even those who notice probably wouldn't mind, unless someone had told them it
    mattered. Like you said, "to no ill effect." It never mattered to anyone
    before the early 90s, when ultra-nerdy gearhead magazines like Bicycle Guide,
    and salesmen like Grant Peterson, started harping on it.

    Personally, I don't give a damn how far apart the pedals are, as long as they're
    symmetric! I can feel 5mm of asymmetry, and it drives me nuts.

    Dear Matt,

    I'd be curious to see if anyone can sit on half a dozen
    bikes and tell which ones have their pedals offset 5 mm from
    the center of the seat.

    There's undoubtedly a point at which an asymmetry is
    noticeable (the just-noticeable-difference is often
    studied), but sensitivity claims on rec.bicycles.tech are
    often startling.

    I'd expect to find that those gnarly things on the ends of
    our legs are not quite as sensitive as the pea-sensing part
    of the fairy-tale princess, particularly when hidden inside
    socks and shoes.

    Lacking six bikes with offset pedals, here's an alternative
    test.

    Sit in a chair, make a mark on the floor, and place your
    feet on the floor as comfortably and symmetrically as you
    can.

    Take a pen and mark the inner edge of one shoe with a pen
    and make a mark where it touches the floor.

    Close your eyes and move that foot around a little
    bit--gently, nothing wild or dramatic, just pat the floor
    and move your shoe around randomly.

    (No fair putting your hands on your knees as guides--not
    that it helps much.)

    After a dozen taps, move your foot back to where it feels
    comfortable and symmetrical again.

    Open your eyes and see how close the mark on your shoe is to
    the mark on the floor.

    Now without moving your foot, close your eyes again, and do
    some more delicate pawing at the ground--try not to move
    more than an inch in any direction--and then return your
    foot to wherever it feels comfortable and symmetrical.

    Open your eyes again. A minute or two of this should give
    you a good idea of how sensitive your feet are in relation
    to each other.

    You could also add a long central on the floor, make truly
    symmetrical marks to either side, place your feet in
    theoretical bliss, close your eyes, drum both feet
    simultaneously, and find out that most people are actually
    slightly lopsided.

    I have no question, but the Q-factor is queer to start with. But, I have

    ever.

    Actually, my first example is of trying half a dozen
    bicycles and seeing if you can tell which ones have a 5 mm
    pedal offset to one side or the other of the seat.

    As for the simple sitting-in-a-chair exercise, it's the
    argument a fortiori.

    If you can't distinguish a 5 mm lateral change of foot
    position sitting still and practically motionless, it would
    seem silly to believe that you could distinguish it while
    heaving on pedals at opposite ends of a circle with a 350
    mm diameter and balancing a bicycle.

    As for the half-degree change that you mention, I'd question
    the ability of a rider to detect a half-degree change unless
    he knows about it in advance. Again, most of the anecdotes
    about incredible sensitivity here on rec.bicycles.tech
    demonstrate the problem of non-blind testing and the placebo
    effect.

    That is, we first feel uncomfortable or slow, make some
    extremely minor change, and honestly feel a marked
    improvement all out of proportion to anything but our
    unconscious and perfectly human expectations.

    Your proposed half-degree 100 km test might be called an
    example of the disagree-bo effect. You're suggesting that a
    non-blind infinitesimal change known to the rider should
    produce pain--and I expect that a dozen riders told that
    they are going to ride 100 km with a half-degree change in
    their cleats to demonstrate the importance of mis-alignment
    will honestly report pain, even if their cleats are left
    untouched.

    A half-degree swing from the center of a 12-inch foot (my
    foot is that big) amounts to moving the end of your big
    toenail about 0.05 inches (1.3 mm) to one side.

    Compare this minute displacement at the tip of your toes to
    the kind of wear common in ordinary socks and shoes--and the
    amount of side flex in the frame with every crank of the
    pedal when you "ride with effort for a hundred km."

    I'm willing to believe that people can be extremely
    sensitive, but it's surprising how often claimed
    sensitivities vanish with blind testing.

    b) careful to emphasize that the claims are likely to be
    made quite honestly and sincerely

    c) comfortable with the likelihood that no amount of testing
    and demonstration will change some deeply held convictions

    d) resigned to the fact that few of us react well to
    questions about our deeply held convictions about our
    abilities

    To give a faintly related example, in one thread here on
    rec.bicycles.tech it was claimed that a pet theory could be
    demonstrated by having a rider hold a vigorous steady speed
    for three minutes on a flat route--and that he would need a
    speedometer accurate to within a tenth of a mile per hour.

    Anyone who tries to hold even a speedometer calibrated in
    half-miles per hour steady for three minutes at 20 mph would
    soon see how unlikely such accuracy was, given the vagaries
    of the breeze, the road surface, and the faint dips found
    even on landing strips.

    Even averaging is unlikely to yield such accuracy--it takes
    180 seconds to cover one mile at 20.0 mph, and 179.1 seconds
    at 20.1 mph.

    But as far as I know, none of this sort of basic arithmetic
    mattered to the fellow who believed that he could hold his
    speed that steady to prove his point.

    That's like saying that a bearing that doesn't display resistance, when
    gently rotated under no load gives a sure indication that it will behave
    perfectly under high load. Not a believer, I.

    Either you never ride in cleats, or you have the most amazing and flexible
    cartilege, and dead neurons in your legs. A difference such as I suggested,
    or maybe just mildly more, will produce a pain effect. Or, you use cleats,
    and don't make any effort in pedaling. I can't say.

    A half-degree is not infinitessimal in most cases. Don't like the
    half-degree, then double it. I don't fuss with the cleats when they are
    correct. On the other hand, as the cleat wears, I know it more from the
    biofeedback than from optical examination.

    Inches ? Don't use them. I'll agree on this measure, for argument's sake,

    If the shoe fits, wear it. The flex is part of the dynamic system which the
    body responds to directly. In sum, if your body is more comfortable (less
    pained) in one configuration than another, you tire less rapidly, you can
    exert more effort, you go faster, you get your kicks from results.

    "claims" that asbestos, tobacco, and other nasty things did not stand up to

    Some of us, however, are satisfied with the idea that you learn to keep your

    Saying that the foot position on the pedal is not important, because
    someone's diehard belief that the moon is made of green cheese has been
    disproven, lacks something - what could that be ? Maybe relevance ? Maybe

    Liked your Roadmaster stuff, too. We have a DKT clunker that the whole
    family uses. It's not comfortable for any long rides at all, but for quick
    trips to the baker or newsagent, it suffices. It has a U-factor that we
    appreciate - "Ugly", so that no one is likely to steal it, left unlocked a
    couple of minutes.

    I agree, along with crank length. Shoes alter how you walk as well. Wearing my
    Danskos and then my Solomon hiking shoes are completely different but neither
    make my feet sore, or my legs.

    Being symmetrical is important, unless you are riding like a bull rider(bow
    legged), or your feet are wacking the chainstays, it jus don matter.

    You are fortunate. I easily can tell the difference in shoes when I walk a
    few feet - some shoes force me to pronate (noticeable knee pain), whereas
    others let me naturally supinate (happy knees).

    I changed out the bottom brackets on my two bikes in order to get a more
    comfortable Q-factor. In each case I used the shortest BB possible and
    decreased the overall Q by 11mm. On one bike, the left pedal came in by 8mm
    and the right by 3mm. On the other bike, the left came in by 7mm and the
    right by 4mm. The distance of the left and right pedals to the centerline
    is nearly equal (within 1 or 2mm) on both bikes. Can I feel a difference?
    You bet - my knees are now painfree!

    I think the bottom line is that Q-factor might not matter for those people
    who have healthy joints, but for those of us who have joint problems,
    Q-factor may be very important.

    Actually, the research into haptic perception (e.g., touch) shows
    quite clearly that perception is frequently more accurate in dynamic
    rather than static conditions. While it seems as though the percept
    of interest ought to get "lost in the noise" as it were, we have some
    ability to tune out extraneous information and refine our focus. A
    skilled cyclist pays almost no attention to balancing, for example.

    Perhaps, like me, you may have found it easier to trackstand when
    you're not paying attention to the trackstand but to the world around
    you. When I try to trackstand deliberately, I am not able to do it as
    well as when I come up to a corner and do a trackstand while scanning
    traffic. When left to its own devices, me cerebellum handles this
    just fine- when I engage the frontal cortex, it's not so good...

    I think a more interesting question is whether a cyclist would
    spontaneously notice the 5 mm difference if they weren't deliberately
    looking for it. For all perceptions there are minimum threshholds
    called "least perceptible difference" which is usually describable
    mathematically. You can feel the difference between a 5 gm and a 10
    gm weight, but not the difference between a 1000 gm and a 1005 grm
    weight. Can people spontaneously notice a 5 mm difference in cleat
    placement or Q factor, if they are not cued to the difference in the
    first place? I'm not so sure.

    From personal experience, though, such small differences can be
    noticed secondarily. Changing cleat position a few mm alleviated
    Achilles tendinitis, and changing Q factor a few mm alleviated knee
    pain. But these effects were noticeable over 200 to 600 km rides, so

    I disagree. My comfort on the bike and how my knees feel is directly
    influenced by Q factor. A Q factor of 140 mm (standard Campy Q factor
    for my Athena and Chorus cranks, anyway) is comfortable, wider Q
    factors are progressively less comfortable and make my knees hurt.
    Other people prefer/are more comfortable on wider Q-factor cranks.

    Q factor was named as such by Grant Petersen. 100 years ago this
    issue was being discussed and was called "tread" and was particularly
    an issue on high wheels.

    Beats me. I don't recall seeing it in that book, but that doesn't
    mean anything.

    In Petersen's case, "Q" stood for "quack" which was related to "duck"
    as in riding "duck footed if your pedals are too far apart."

    Actually, the research into haptic perception (e.g., touch) shows
    quite clearly that perception is frequently more accurate in dynamic
    rather than static conditions. While it seems as though the percept
    of interest ought to get "lost in the noise" as it were, we have some

    skilled cyclist pays almost no attention to balancing, for example.

    Perhaps, like me, you may have found it easier to trackstand when
    you're not paying attention to the trackstand but to the world around
    you. When I try to trackstand deliberately, I am not able to do it as
    well as when I come up to a corner and do a trackstand while scanning
    traffic. When left to its own devices, me cerebellum handles this
    just fine- when I engage the frontal cortex, it's not so good...

    I think a more interesting question is whether a cyclist would
    spontaneously notice the 5 mm difference if they weren't deliberately
    looking for it. For all perceptions there are minimum threshholds
    called "least perceptible difference" which is usually describable
    mathematically. You can feel the difference between a 5 gm and a 10
    gm weight, but not the difference between a 1000 gm and a 1005 grm
    weight. Can people spontaneously notice a 5 mm difference in cleat
    placement or Q factor, if they are not cued to the difference in the
    first place? I'm not so sure.

    From personal experience, though, such small differences can be
    noticed secondarily. Changing cleat position a few mm alleviated
    Achilles tendinitis, and changing Q factor a few mm alleviated knee
    pain. But these effects were noticeable over 200 to 600 km rides, so
    the repetition was a factor. I don't recall perceiving any difference
    directly from these changes, though. I think they were below the
    threshhold of least perceptible difference.

    something that can't be noticed immediately might still be
    noticed if it slowly produces a long term effect. An example
    would be the blister at the end of the first day in the new
    shoes that felt fine in the store.

    In questions of fit, however, things can become complicated.

    It's not unusual for us to find that some activity
    eventually causes pain, so we change the fit slightly and
    feel better--not just because of expectation, but because
    the change in fit actually did move things enough to take
    the load off a damaged area.

    The outcome that we hope for is that this change in fit
    fixes things permanently.

    But another common outcome is that the new area is slowly
    damaged by the same activity, just like the old area, and
    we're right back where we started.

    When people believe that extremely minor changes produce
    immediate and obvious results, there's a good chance that
    expectation is at work.

    Another possible explanation is the tipping-point theory. To
    take the example of crank length, some people find
    considerable differences between a 172.5mm crank and a 175mm
    crank. Ignoring any expectations arising from the cost and
    installation, let's assume that the 2.5mm difference really
    does make a noticeable difference.

    It could be that 2.5mm really is above the least noticeable
    difference-that is, the rider will be able to notice in
    blind testing a 2.5mm change up or down from 172.5mm.

    But it could also be that the rider would be just as happy
    with (and unable to tell any difference between) a 175mm,
    177.5mm, or 180mm crank. Things simply reach a painful point
    2.5mm below 175mm--at that length, sore spots come into
    contact.

    To return to the general question, some of the claims about
    fit that we see here on rec.bicycles.tech are so minute that
    they unconsciously imply that riders should check their
    socks with a micrometer to avoid agony.

    compresses our spinal disks requires us to adjust the seat

    ask for details and blind tests. Elsewhere in this thread, a
    half-degree change in cleats is predicted to cause pain
    within 60 miles.

    I'm curious how accurately anyone can even adjust a
    cleat--half a degree sounds like a change that requires a
    screw adjuster or a clamp-on rod and adjustment-jig on
    anything as small as a bicycle pedal.

    I believe this was the first use of "Q factor" in this sense.

    "Q factor" already existed with a totally different meaning as a part of
    FitKit lingo, being related to the ratio of femur length to total leg
    length.

    I suspect that Grant may have heard then forgotten the term in the
    FitKit context, and then didn't recognize it when it popped back into
    his head later.

    I guess your blind test is supposed to beat my blind test. And we still
    don't know if you ride with cleats, do we. Or if you push it. Did you get
    a lot of test subjects' replies to fill a spreadsheet ? or a compost bin ?

    What level of accuracy did you have in mind ? Or are you just plain calling
    me a liar ? When something "sounds like" are you saying it's ballast ? I
    think your silly example (static foot shuffling) still is indefensible, that
    you don't have any experience with cleat adjustments, or that your skeleton
    is Jello-based. I am not defending the Q-factor, but you are making it more
    believable the more you write. You don't like the degree changes ? OK, what
    about moving cleats forward or backward.

    Usually, you are readable, but your reliance on your intuitions is limiting
    your reason in this discussion. As I said - good on slime - good on
    RoadMaster - failing grade here. Ride a bit - it could help.
