  1. Was supposed to do 9, cut it off at 4, too damn cold, too much of a
    native-Californian weenie. 22F w/12 mph...so w/the windchill....it was damn
cold.... 7am NYC. my gordini goretex mitts were great. first sub freezing
run of the season. i'm trying to convince myself that this isn't BS! (running
in this type of weather....but who am i fooling, it is). i hate the thought
of wearing a mask....but damn i could have used one this morning. i've got
the wrong attitude going way too early in the season. at this rate i won't
    make it through january.

curious...what do the elites and pros do in winter. do they migrate to warmer
climates to train through winter?...in europe do they all go down to spain? i
believe most of the american elites live on the west coast anyway. or do they
go into a winter training thing and take it indoors? do any elites maintain
their normal schedule of 100+ miles a week all outside in the winter (those
that dwell in cold climates...anyone know)?

A mask? Are you moving to Point Barrow, Alaska. I've been to -15f and
never needed a mask and I live north of you where it is colder and more
    wind.

I'm neither and you don't fit the bill either. At most I smear some
Vaseline on my face when it's real cold. Other that that I wear
appropriate clothes. This isn't rocket science!

20-25F = average nightly winter run conditions.
I consider it tepid to cool. Don't ususally
factor in the wind till it's above 15mph.

Heck, if you're wearing G tex that raises the

wow...did i ask a forbidden question about the elites doug? it's very common to
see most outdoor sports professionals migrate to warm places in the winter (so
they can maintain their training). Golf & Tennis professionals for example.
    Jockeys & Cyclist, etc.

i was just curious if like other athletic professionals...elite middle & long
distance runners tend to locate to wamer climates to avoid winters in cold
    places.

.....between europe, japan, and n. america...there must be elites that dwell in
cold climates. curious in how they cope/manage their profession relative to
the environment. Do they grin and bear it and do their 120 mile weeks in this
sub freezing weather?....go indoors?..or do they generally relocate to warmer
places to train? anyone know generally what most seem to do?

does the answer doug touch on notions of the quality of cold climate outdoor
training that.....perhaps discomfort you? seems i touched a nerve w/you with

"The weather is never too cold, but the runner is often inappropriately
    dressed."

    What you need is:

    1) technical/functional underwear (long; with 2b sometimes short).
    2a) a middle layer, and
a top layer of jacket and pants/tights, or
2b) a top layer, if it´s "windproof lite".
    3) proper tehcnical/functional headgear (not just any easily
    discardableable
    knit cap)
    4) gloves; Goretex is overkill, layers work here too.
    5) last but not least, the tops off a pair of woollen socks to make
    sure your
ankles and Achilles are protected; see to it that your pants/tights
    are long
    enough, too.

A silk "commando mask" or balaclava can be recommended, but I hope you
hadn´t washed or shaved your face before running? A lip balm would be
okay, too, but as Vaseline merely stops your face from feeling the cold
(rather than really protects it aginst the cold) I don´t recommend it
(not that you´re likely to get frostbite during your runs).

OTOH if you have a problem of breathing in the cold (due to
asthma-related reasons), there are specific masks that cover the nose
and the mouth; they do work and could be available in a store selling
    XC skiing equipment near you.

Down to south of Spain and/or down to South Africa (Dullstroom,

    sponsored, of course.
When at home, there´s the trusty old treadmill, indoor tracks and -

Lance, masks aren't that big of a pain in the ass. It will help you get
through the first 5 minutes. After that, pull it down (or up, depending
on the type) and you'll be fine except for the occasional blast of
headwind, then you put it back on for a minute. I ran at sunrise in
Boston last year on every cold day...many days just below 0F...one
morning at -10F actual temp (-30 with windchill).

Another solution is to use a thin layer of vasiline.

Anyway, one thing that I think helps make running in the cold more
pleasant is to run slower, especially if the mask is on. Some masks
might be better than others, but breathing really hard through any type
    of mask sucks.

Just to make you mad, here's the 5 day forcast for Mission Viejo, CA, where I
    do track workouts:

    Dec 17 Sunny 75°/41° 0 %

    Dec 18 Sunny 75°/46° 0 %
    Sun
    Dec 19 Mostly Sunny 74°/42° 10 %
    Mon
    Dec 20 Partly Cloudy 71°/42° 10 %

Yesterday, it was 84 degrees. I was out there, with blocks, and with one
hurdler from the JC track team. Neither of us had shirts on. I'm going to
have to stop doing sprint workouts at lunch time....it's too damn hot.

Did somebody say something about cold??

BTW, Meb and Deena, and others on the Running USA Team, live in Mammoth Lakes,
CA, at 7000', where they have snow (this is a major ski resort). Deena runs
some 140 mile weeks. Joe Vigil is actually fond of running in cold and bad

Ya know, I enjoy when the cold weather comes. All the trails and runs empty
out and the animals, particularly the deer, are far more active in winter
than summer because food is more scarce, so you see more of them.. The
summer/warmer weather makes for crowded (at least in my mind) conditions,
but once the cold kicks in I end up seeing the same 3 or 4 people on the
trails, as opposed to the 20 or more I might see during summer. I enjoy
nothing more than a morning run when I don't see another human for the
entire trip (last two days have been like that actually). That's a nice way
    to run.

I live in Denver and it never gets too cold here...this morning was 22
degrees and snowy...so it isn't like Minnesota or Michigan mornings. In
January and February it will be a steady 10 to 20 degrees in the early
mornings and that is really good weather to run in. If it is snowy then a
lot more ambient light is reflected and early morning runs are better lit.
Almost everything about winter (except for poor footing once in a while) is
better. The cold only matters for the first mile and a half and then your
    pretty warmed up anyway.

I don't wear tights anyway, but I have yet to go too running pants this
winter. The first things that get cold on me are hands and ears so I will be
in gloves and a soft hat once in a while. I won't go to pants until the
temps drop below 10 degrees....and I seem to be the rule rather than the
exception in that regard. the people who do run in the winter here don't
tend to bundle up at all.

Ah...I partly grew up in Denver and I've seen it
where the temp stayed below zero for a good week at
a time in Dec Jan Feb. One night I camped out in the
backyard when it was -25F. Hey, I thought it was fun
    at the time 🙂

Now with all this global warming it may not be getting
as cold recently. But in nearby mountain valleys it's
been well below zero most nights for weeks. Course the
difference between the Rockies and Minnesota isn't the
    cold. It's the humidity when it's cold. CO is dry cold;
Minnesota wet cold. My grandmother, who grew up on a
Minnesota farm, used to tell stories about sticking to
the toilet seat when using the outhouse at 40 below...

Did somebody say something about cold??

not me (41F near midnight). They're forecasting rain again 🙁 We'd had
a week or so of 0 to 20F, that set the snow just perfect, before it
starting warming up again a few days ago. People up here get really
irritated when the weather gets warm in winter.

BTW, Meb and Deena, and others on the Running USA Team, live in Mammoth Lakes,
CA, at 7000', where they have snow (this is a major ski resort). Deena runs
some 140 mile weeks. Joe Vigil is actually fond of running in cold and bad
    conditions.

Many top mtn runners (and I assume trails in general) are also top
snowshoe runners. In fact there's pro tri athletes that do well with
snowshoe running. One of the top US female runners (Doug's neck of the
woods) ranks highly for trails, mountains, and snowshoe.

My sympathies to people that don't have seasons 😉
