  1. Im a newbie mountain biker and i just bought a 2005 Rockhopper a few weeks ago. I noticed when ever i am in my 4 easiest gears in the rear, the chain rubs on the front derailleur bar. Is the chain ever supposed to rub on anything?

  2. Yep.
My Specalised Stumpjumper [ http://www.specialized.com/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=9707 ] runs Schimano LX & XT throughout the groupset & when the chain is on the outside chainwheel (front) while on the inside cog on the rear cassette the front derailuer rubs.
Even though most new MTBs run at least 27speed groupset, you might find some ratios repeat throughout the combinations available. This means that you might need to try combiations that give you the right ratio, but also gives you the straightest chain-line (therefore doesn’t rub).

Brand new most don’t rub at all, but as time/mileage goes on, things wear, derailiuers may bend slightly or wear & you’ll get some rubbing in funny gear combinations.

  3. well its not meant to work in say the real big gears on the back and the big ones on the front, your meant to keep the chain straight but if its bad adjust the barrel adjustors so that it still shifts nicely but rubs as least as possible in the extremes but you wont stop it
