Go for it. HTML is a piece of cake - loads of tutorials on the www. Do a
google for 'html tutorials' - I had no prior computing experience, but
published my first website within 8 days of starting to learn html a few
years ago. As for webhosts... plenty of good deals out there.

Just to let you know that 'wildscotland' and 'wild-scotland' are not
available as either .com or .co.uk domain names. Somebody's beaten you to
them. You could go for either name as a .info or one of the other types
though.

At the moment they are in one folder on my hard drive called "digicam",
with a subfolder "originals".

In the "originals" folder I then have folders for each set of photos, for
example "Ochil Hills" followed by the date.

In this folder I then have a folder for any "edited" pictures.

Just wondering if this is the best method for archiving. Makes it
diffult to back up as all the edited files are in amongst the originals,
plus one of these days I'm sure I'm going to overwite an original by
mistake!

I have a top-level folder consisting just of the date. I then archive
to CD by date. I was going to create an index file so I could find
things easily but haven't bothered so far, my memory's usually
accurate enough.

I'd recommend www.hostlogical.com (or rather,
http://www.hostlogical.com/?a_aid=23&a_bid=8 as that gives me some
money for any sales!).
Cheap, reliable, and you get loads of functionality for free.

I asked this question a week or so ago, so if you search Google Groups
on "web hosting" you should find some recent recommendations.

I went for www.1and1.co.uk and was initially very impressed. However,
I'm now very unimpressed as I had a problem and they've consistenly
ignored my emails and attempts to get beyond basic technical support.
There seems to be only 1 phone number given out: it's really p******
me off now. Others had had good experiences, though.

www.123-reg.co.uk (could be .com - not sure) is cheap, but owned by
Pipex, and they charge 50 pence per minute to give you info about the
service they offer.

I used to be with HostEurope and they used to be v. good (if
expensive), but they were taken over by Pipex.

So.... I'm not sure waht to recommend. If you find a good one, please
let me know...

Personally, I have one folder for all originals, each set of photos is
in a folder within this in the format:
YYYY-MM-DD - title
This means they will be sorted in order of date, title is usually the
location.
Any edited photos are in a completely seperate folder from the
originals, to make backing up easier, and prevent accidentally
overwriting an original.

I recommend Macoman ( http://www.macoman.co.uk/ ) for hosting. Maybe not
quite the cheapest, but UK based, and very reliable and good support.
123-reg are cheap for domains, and work well for me.

For photos I reccommend Gallery ( http://gallery.menalto.com/ ).
You don't need any knowledge of HTML to set it up, but it can help if
you want to customise it.

I have my site hosted by United Hosting (http://www.unitedhosting.co.uk )
and I've been with them just over a year now. No complaints.

Have a look at their forums. That will give you an impression of what

I'm sorry to hear that. I've been with them for a few years now without any
problems and the one time I emailed them they appologised for the delay in
replying, I think it took them about a week. I think that was directly from
the website. It wasn't anything to do with a problem with their service
though, I was having trouble with my FTP client not connecting but it sorted
itself out in the end, as these things do 🙂

I rang them earlier this evening and was put through to a young man
who said he was in complaints, said he had my email and apologised for
not responding sooner. I feel better now: hopefully the problem will
be sorted. I'm relieved, as I didn't want to have to move again quite
that quickly! :-)

If your looking to archive and backup a large number of files I'd
recommend using two separate hard disks. Backing up from hard disk to
hard disk is just so much faster and more reliable than burning CDs, and
you can also automate the process. For extra security you could have one
of the disks as an external or in a removable drive bay such that you
take it away from the computer and store it in a different location.
That way if the computer is damaged or stolen you still have the hard
disk.

I use a variation on this theme which is to have two computers networked
together and keep a copy of my important data on both computers. One
computer also has a removable drivebay and I take regular copies of the
hard disk as a 2nd backup.

I do have a DVD/CD burner, but this is mainly for making discs to give
away to friends rather than as my main backup

It's the two W's which make the name work IMO. WS doesn't roll off the
tongue so well. Colin Prior has effectively done a "Wilderness
Scotland" by reversing the order and changing the name, i.e. Highland
Wilderness. Still doesn't roll off the tongue so well though.

How about Sublime Scotland? Are there any synonyms for wilderness that
start with S? Soggy Scotland? Scratchy Scotland? (in midge season)
;-)

Harsh Highlands? Bleak Bens? Moody Moors? Scottish Summits? ;-)

I have a Fuji Finepix and it comes with a very useful program that creates a
dated folder when it reads the camera, then it names each image by the
date/time the image was taken... Gets this info from the EXIF in the image 🙂

where you can download it - you have to register but I did anyway with the
camera... and you'll have to be on Broadband as it's 65MB !!!

Don't know if there's anything similar out there that's like this, it's just
such a commonsensical way of doing it, I don't know why all camera software
doesn't do it automatically...
