AFAIK it should work with Shimano-stylee shifters. I ran both Sachs and
Shimano on my Kingcycle in that era.

new sram. At the moment I have twist grip 7 speed changers but I want to
change to bar end changers and it seems that shimano are the only ones

I believe it is the same as the new "numbered" SRAM shifters (i.e 7.0,
9.0). It is not Shimano compatible.

My hunch is that Dave is right but "who knows?"
BTW do , or did, Shimano make bar end shifters for 7 speed set ups?

They did and if you hunt around they're still available. St John St Cycles

The spacing between 7 and 8 is the same, so you could use 8 speed
barcons and just not use the last click.

Hmmm- I was under the impression that 8 speed shifters wouldn't work on
7, but if Sheldon says they will, then it must be so:

Shimano Ultegra 8 Speed Bar-end Shifters
These permit switching between indexed and friction shifting.
The 7-speed units are no longer available, but the 8-speed shifters
actually work quite well with 7-speed cassettes, especially with modern
rear derailers.

Yes, in fact, when 8 speed cassettes hit the market, many people found
that their 7 speed shifter had an 'extra click', and they could usually get
into the 8th cog with it.
