Hi all,
After months of wrestling with a Halfords high bike rack (mainly the adjust mechanism) I finally plumped for a Saris Bones, which is infinitely more adjustable and easy to store after use. However I have noticed a big problem – it covers my number plate and partially the lights of my hatchback. That must be illegal here in the UK.
Is there any kit, service or otherwise that can overcome this problem? Thanks
Caher.

Is there any kit, service or otherwise that can overcome this problem? You can buy supplementary lights and plates (as used on trailers) and
mount them behind the bikes so they can be seen. It is indeed illegal
if you don't do do something like this.Pete.

Would I need to have some sort of auxiliary power - the same set up as people with tow bars have?

Caher. You do need a trailer board.
There was some design innovation thingie a while back where sensors were
attached to the lenses of brake light , indicator etc. to avoid you having
to have a trailer socket fitted. -

Caher. What you require is something like this...

This is one of the benefits of a towbar mounted bike rack - the problem does no
occur, as the bike rack has the lighting & registration board built in - thus
avoiding the breaking of the law as regards lights & registration of car being
visible.Cheers, helen s

Caher.Maybe you could take the bikes off the rack and cycle to your destination?

When did you become so anti-car? You made just two posts to
uk.rec.cycling in 2002, actually as cross-posts from uk.legal, and then
suddenly re-appeared after your phone call from millward-brown (which was
on 18th November 2004 according to what you posted in alt.spam).Why did you pick u.r.c to carry out your hate campaign against
Millward-Brown?Why did you stop using [email hidden] as your published email address?

better than "Uranus", I suppose. But anyway.
