Sorry to break everyone's concentration on doping, Lance & Sheryl, etc.
I'm building up a TT bike and I'm curious if anyone has any defensable rules of thumb relating crank length on a TT bike to crank length on a road bike? Should TT cranks be shorter? Longer? The same? Why?

Shorter can help you get more aero.

I suck at TTs and use cranks the same length as for road racing.

Click on related articles for additional info. The science suggests that pedal velocity is probably something you should optimize. IOW, you can achieve the same optimal pedal velocity with different crank arm lengths by changing gear so there is little, if anything, to be gained.
defensible rule of thumb: aero cross-section of rider and bike, and positional comfort of rider are primary, and speed varies dependently with each and both. if you want numbers buy some tunnel time. otherwise just try to show as little chest, arm, and leg as possible and still remain 'reasonable' comfortable for your estimated time in that position. good luck. and thanks for generating something on topic that's not pop culture.
