yeah it is...in fact I remember a general thread about it a month or two
back. search Google Groups if you get a chance.
just about all makers don't spec highly use-specific parts as far as
things like tires or tubes. why push up the cost of a bike $3 for Slime
tubes if only 5 or 10% of the riders buying one need 'em? most choose
fairly 'average' seats, stems, and bars/grips as well.
but look for the thread on thorns and it should help you I'd guess.

I'd say most riders here in Oz don't have the need for thorn proof tubes.
Where do you ride?

I think that it's just south of Byron Bay. I believe that I spent a
couple of days there once.
To the OP: Believe it or not, but most people try to avoid the thorns
while they are out riding, and many places that they sell VT2's (like
the rest of the world) don't usually have bad-ass thorn bushes
everywhere. There is no point speccing expensive, heavy, thorn specific
tyres when 95% of people don't want or need them.
Chase up that Google search. As I recall it was a good discussion with
some good ideas.

Well, here in the Netherlands we need wooden shoe proof pedals.
But, please tell us, how is the rest of the bike ?
Does it ride well ? Problems ?
How much did you pay ?
In the Netherlands its about 2000 Euro for a VT2.
( Frame AluxX SL 6013
Manitou Black Comp SPV
27 speed Shimano Deore (LX)
SRAM Attack Trigger shifters
HFX-9-XC hydraulic
Manitou Swinger SPV 3-way Airshock
Mavic/ Hutchinson Scorpion tires )
(You should ride on scorpions, not on thorns !)
Greetings from the Dutch Lowlands,
Marcel.
