  1. I have been off this list for a while, but thought i would post a few things
as i approach my first anniversery of reaching my goal of 160

just got the labs back on my latest dr. visit.

in 2002 when my weight was 204, my blood pressure was 156/91 which is what
really scared me into dieting seriously.
my total cholesterol was 179, but this was deceptive, as my good cholesterol
was 34, below normal, an ignored problem i had had for many years. my
triglycerides was 159 (high). my bad cholesterol was 113 (high, but not
    overly so).

after 3 months on the diet, almost halfway to target (my weight down to the
high 180's) my blood pressure had dropped to 128/86, my total cholesterol
had risen to 195, but this too was deceptive, my triglycerides had dropped
to 97 (very good, probably because of increased exercise) my good
cholesterol had risen finally to the normal range of 49 for the first time
in over 20 years. My bad cholesterol had risen to 127, but my doctor thought
that this was acceptable in light of the drop in my bp, and increase in good
cholesterol. It is good to have a doctor that weighs risks realistically.

now my lab values come back from my latest visit, a few days shy of one year
after reaching (and maintaining!) my target weight. For the first time all
my numbers are good! my blood pressure is 130/80 (ok) my total cholesterol
is down to 160, and this again masks the real progress. My triglycerides
have continued to fall, down to 61, and my good cholesterol has continued to
climb, up to 62. My bad cholesterol has for the first time dropped into the
    normal range, 86

    2004 160 130 80 160 61 86 62

A lot of people are saying the low carb craze has peaked, but I have a hard
    time criticizing anything about it.....

Way to go, Bob! You are one of the successful people who has regained your
life through a healthy diet, and I congratulate you!

The low-carb lifestyle is not a craze, nor has it peaked. Since I'm on it
for life, as obviously you are, it doesn't matter what others think or do.
We know what is best for us.

It amazes me that I have almost effortlessly lost nearly 40 pounds this year
by low-carbing. People tell me how great I look, and when I try to explain
how it works, they go "uh-huh" and turn away. I do know a few people who
are also low-carb, and they tend to know the "secret handshake" or whatever.
    Actually, they're just not stupid.

You have gained control of your body, and that's what it's all about.
That's what the rest of us are doing. We learn enough about ourselves to
    make things work. Again, congratulations!

    years to your score!

  4. Bob,

Congrats on making such great improvements in your health.

The only thing I would caution you about is the blood pressure. I, too,
assumed that 130 and 135 diastolic were okay since that's what the doctor
told me and they were as low as I could get even with significant weight
    loss.

However, there's a lot of research emerging which suggests that if you can
get under 120 and even down to 110 your chances of avoiding stroke and heart
    attack are much, much better.

Also, if you have any blood sugar abnormality, which many people who succeed
on low carb do, the ACE inhibitor drugs like lisinopril are extremely good
for you. So you might consider whether it would be a good idea to talk to
your doctor about adding an ACE inhibitor to your regimen and getting that
blood pressure down to a truly healthy level.

If he says your blood sugar is normal based only on a fasting glucose test,
please check out my web pages on the subject at
    http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/risk.htm. A recent study I haven't
yet put on my page showed that one out of ten people with "pre-diabetes"
which is a range many doctors treat as normal already have early diabetic
kidney disease. That could explain the slightly higher than normal blood
    pressure.

  5. yes, i am not totally satisfied with my bp (which is why i said just ok,
which it is compared to what it was) It was as low as 100/68 when i was in
my 20's, but has never been close to that since. I suspect that real drops
will take consistant excercise, and maintaining normal weight for more than
a year, and will also require a change in work and life stress levels. This
latter part i have less control than i would wish. My blood sugar is fine,
    and has always been ok.
