LOCKERS for every pupil have been introduced at a Carlisle school in a
bid to encourage youngsters to cycle safely.

[note: no comment about what was done to encourage children to cycle
safely, although much waffle about PFDBs]

MP Eric Martlew, who earlier this year failed in his bid to make it
law for children under 16 to wear helmets, was at Newman School in
Carlisle to open a new bike shed and the lockers.

He said: “It is a school that does an excellent job in many ways for
its pupils and I am delighted that Newman School is encouraging the
use of safe cycling.“

Angie Lee, chief executive of The Bicycle Helmet initiative Trust,
travelled from Reading to speak to the students about cycle safety.

Mr Martlew is backing the Trust’s attempts to amend the Road Safety
Bill which would make it compulsory for children to wear cycle helmets
on public roads.

Ms Lee said: “It just helps by getting the issue back on the
parliamentary agenda.

“The British Medical Association have looked into the issue and they
have found helmets are effective and will save lives.” The paediatric
nurse says she has seen hundreds of children injured by not wearing
helmets.

She added: “They are worried that if they make it law they will put
people off cycling.

“My worry is that they are putting targets before children’s lives.”

Headteacher John O’Neill said: “Every child at Newman now has a locker
which has room for their books, coat, PE kit and a cycle helmet.

“I believe the journey to and from school is the most dangerous part
of a child’s day.

“We have made it a priority to encourage children to travel safely to
and from school.

“There is now no reason why they shouldn’t wear a helmet.”

Part of a larger programme of investment, £8,000 for the final
installation of lockers came to the school from Capita through Cumbria
County Council.

No, that is what she is doing.

I suggest an investigation to determine whether this belief is
accurate or not. I suspect it is not, though in these days dangerous
things like sewing, cooking, woodwork, metalwork, chemistry and
physical education have been so dumbed down that almost no danger
remains. How boring.

It's often forgotten that if we were to all to be forced to wear
plastic hats, there'd be no chance of secure storage ever being
provided by councils, employers etc.

A lot is being done in that area.

I have secured funding for me and three colleagues to attend a four
day Cycle Instructor's Course. We will be qualified to instruct
children from the age of 3 to cycle. As well as that, we are looking
at ways to encourage children to walk to school by setting up walking
busses. Transport for London allow children under 11 to travel for
free on most bus journeys. We are looking at car sharing schemes.

All is done with the sole purpose of reducing reliance on the car for
the school run and making driving safe for those people who either
have no option or are too stubborn to change their habits.

I work in just one school. Schools up and down the country are
devising their own *school travel plans*.
