  1. Well, thanks to everyone, I had my number on correctly and ran my
first race this morning. It was that "Metric Half-Marathon"- thing
that drove everyone crazy a few weeks ago. The funny thing was,
everything was marked in miles (a total of 8.1), not km.

I finished in 1:27, towards the back of the pack, which I figured I
would. I'll worry about speed later. All-in-all, I'm pretty whipped,
but feel good that I was able to finish without walking at all.

Thanks again for all the answers to my earlier questions.

    Oh, and hills suck.

You have two choices, only run or race flat races or make hills your
friend by running more of them. I sure you knew this but.... 🙂

Congrats on your first race! Yep, I've noticed that just about every
race in the U.S. is marked in miles regardless of the distance --
though I ran a couple of 5Ks recently that were marked in Km and found
it helpful (it helped that my goal time was a number easily divisible
    by 5).

Well, what'd you expect from a race in Flower MOUND. <giggle> Doug is
right, work some hills into your training runs now and then and you'll
    do fine.

I actually like hills, as long as I'm not trying for a PR.

  4. Hey - nice one. Now you can enter others and laugh as the newbies struggling
    with their numbers :-)

Me, I still can't figure out why even after 26 miles the paper the numbers are
on is always in perfect condition (Obviously someone will point out it's because
I'm too slow, which, yes, I am).

Don't worry about your times 1) it doesn't matter 2) it's amazing how fast they
go down when you relax and just enjoy the training.

    Ms. Monica did that.
By the way, did she ever sue him?
    She should!

Now that you know how to put your number on, your next lesson is
learning that hills are your friends 🙂 In moderation, they also
relieve the repetitive stress of constant flat.

I'm not sure what a "hill" is to you for normal training or for races,
but you could start adding a hill workout one day a week, and build the
size and steepness gradually (assuming your topography permits) or
increase number and intensity of repeats or.... Baskin Robbins has
nothing on hill training as far as flavors are concerned 😉

Remember the views are better from the top of the hill 🙂 *And* you get
to watch the moon rising from behind the mountains and reflecting in the
thin, clear ice starting to form on the lakes, amidst the surrounding
    darkness.

I guess a more honest statement would be that "I suck at hills". Good
advice as far as working them in each week.

Nope, it's because it isn't paper, it's Tyvek. Tough stuff. Bsides, if
you were faster, the number would be on you for a shorter time and thus in
    better shape.

I always pre-crumple mine up thoroughly before pinning

    There's one in Grapevine, I think, that calls itself a 'European-style' 5K
and I think that the only difference is they mark the course by kilometer
rather than mile. I don't know of any others around here, though.

Assuming it's the same course as last year, I think it's only moderately
hilly. Stay away from St. Vincent's Chili Trot (5K in October)in Bedford for a
    while - that's much hillier.
