  1. Who can tell me:

Can I run 8sp Ultegra barends with a 7-sp XT rear der and 7-sp cassette? I
assume that the cassette is also XT.

My vague recollection is that 8sp is the same spacing as 7-sp, just don't use
    the last click?

    Thanks

The spacing is close, but not the same; 4.8mm vs 5.0mm between
centers. It usually works as well as many worn der setups, but not
always well enough for every rider. If your freehub will accommodate
the 8sp cassette, of course, the obvious solution is to step up to one
    more sprocket.

The spacing is a bit different, but you can always use friction mode.

Easiest solution: switch the shift lever to friction mode.

I have used this type setup for years. The spacing is so close you
will never know the difference. The rear deraileur stops will
prevent that last click from happening.
