  1. I was driving (slap wrists) into Norwich tonight, to do a spot of work at the
UEA. At the three sets of traffic lights before the main UEA entrance, cars
went through red lights at each one. Bloody cyclists - after all, they *must*
have been cyclists in disguise, as we all know according to uk.tosspot, Real
Motorists never do such a thing, it's only cyclists that go through red lights.

    Cheers, helen s ;-Þ

    Hiya Helen.

UEA's where I work! You're right - there are some awful standards of
driving round there; the whole Earlham Road / Fiveways / UEA area is
dreadful for driving or cycling - the infrastructure just can't cope with
    the volume of traffic. Add a few impatient / d!ckhead cagers & it's a
recipe for disaster. For once the sh*red use paths are a much better idea
than trying to ride on the roads. No idea why motorists burn reds round
there anyway - just gets them to the next traffic lights (or more likely
traffic jam) that bit quicker :-(

Don't shout too loud about the lousy motorists, though. Every day around
campus & nearby I see People On Bikes (not Proper Cyclists) doing the
daftest things & narrowly avoiding death. However, a pleasingly high
amount of Proper Cyclists in hi-viz & reflective gear (& with half-decent
lights) over the last few weeks.

Out of interest (and if it's not personal or whatever) what do you do for
    UEA?

I know someone whose car got hit at a crossroad by a bloke doing that,
and his leg got broken. And he got prosecuted, 'cause of he wasn't
taxed or insured, even though it was the other bloke's fault!

    Ain't no justice, is there?

Which is compulsory, and which illegal, out of cannabis cigarettes and bike lights?

Does the *someone-you-know* still drive without tax and insurance?

Plenty of POB - but, as you say, a growing number of reflectives/hi-viz/use of
lights. I sent the link to the Hampshire CC road safety shop to UEA BUG as a
source of *cheap* such gear for students where money is understandably tight.
One thing I think the UEA could score points on is if the languages dept
translated the Highway Code for the vast number of overseas students that study
    at the UEA.

    Hi Helen:

It must be a nationwide thing (or a 'near university' thing). Every
morning coming to work at the U of Glasgow I see cars coming through
reds as long as five seconds after the red illuminates, even at places
where they get a reeeeeeally long shot at them.

Yet if you ask what they think about cyclists it's *always* us going
through red lights that they come up with.

Ho hum Friday and a great , fun ride in this morning.

Hope your youngest (didn't say whether son/daughter) is okay. You really take you life in your hands croosing roads these days.🙁

Absolutely true. I'm a cyclist, and when I was in Manchester today I
went through *three* red lights in a row.

(I was on a bus at the time, but that's *not the point*, is it?)

    Link is there, see

    or more specifically:

But the link to http://www.hants.gov.uk/roadsafety/shop.html is a 404.
Looks like it needs to point to

I've mailed the BUG to get it updated.

You're right about the decent prices, plus it looks like postage incl.
Think I'll grab some of their armbands. Lights & reflectives also sold in
    the UEA post office.

Expect another blast against 'bloody cyclists' soon. On Jonathan Ross's
programme tonight Sheila Hancock mentioned she'll be in a new series,
being screened soon, of 'Grumpy Old Women' - and one of her betes noires
is cyclists going through red lights and cycling on pavements. Not that
I condone that sort of antisocial behaviour.

Ooh - star spot - guess who I saw cycling on the pavement outside where
I work on Gray's Inn Road about lunchtime on Thursday?

That's not strictly true. If you can incapacitate them to the point at
which they can no longer cycle / drive, then you have successfully
removed a moron from the road. Of course, just shooting them is probably
more humane... but what could you do with the body? ;-)

After you've hanged and drawn him, chopping off his goolies will have
    a lessened effect.

    I say:

    1. Chop his goolies off and feed them to him.
    2. Hang him.
    3. Draw his intestines and feed them to him.
    4. Leave him to die.
    5. Donate the remains to London Zoo for animal food.
